About the Author

Originally from New Zealand, Rob Young has spent thirty years in Greater China including the last twenty years in Shanghai. He was the pioneer of western pubs in Shanghai and quickly became a high profile western entrepeneur in the city. Not restricted by the ivory towers of multinational corporations, Rob learnt to do business on the street "the Chinese way" and shares remarkable and very funny insights into the Chinese people and the Chinese system. Now semi-retired, Rob continues to live in Shanghai with his Shanghainese wife and their 12 year old daughter.

I worked in Shanghai for 18 years and drank as a regular in both Shanghai Sally's Bar and O'Malley's Bar, this is a factual read and honest in what goes on. I really enjoyed the book, it brought back so many memories.

I met Rob Young back in 1997 when I returned to China to open a hotel in Pudong aptly named the dark side of Shanghai. The trek over to Puxi via the tollbooth was well worth the effort to sup on draught Guinness served at O’Malleys, along with the pub grub, I never saw Ratovan on the menu, but did see the rat on one occasion along the rafters.

Reading the book, brought back so many funny memories of the characters from that time period in Shanghai. The trials and tribulations that Rob speaks of in his book are both genuine and very real, and 17 years on and one faces not dissimilar issues today, highly recommend reading the book, whether you are an old China hand reminiscing or just off the boat looking to find your fortune.

This is a great book - easy to read but packed with useful information on how business is done in China and how to (or how not to) approach it. Rob Young clearly has gone through a lot and here he has shared his experiences so others can learn from them. I can see this book being invaluable to anyone starting a job or a business in China, or perhaps in any developing market. The style is easy - I laughed a lot reading the anecdotes - but by the end I also felt more better able to understand business in China and more confident.

This was a brilliant book even you don't know China.. Even after being around Shanghai for 13 years, there are many of Rob's observations and anecdotes are new knowledge to be yet "fall into place" It humorous, yet honest and forthright the whole way through and I couldn't put it down.. An I'm not a book reader by nature.. But I enjoyed and every world of this and identified with a lot and learned a lot..

I came across this book on one of those free ebook sharing web sites that are ever popular. I immediately recognised the Authors name as I had met Rob several times (or at least noticed him at the bar) He reminded me of a very small Humphrey Bogart playing Marlowe! Sitting, a strait drink in one hand and a cheap cigarette in the other, always observing his clientele. In those days Rob was known as the “Owl” in reference to his observational skills. This is a great book. Easy to read, the tales unfold nicely. A perfect book on a long haul flight for anyone going into China or on a beach for anyone having got out of there. Rob has hit the nail on the head in writing down the quirks, bizarre happening and daily struggles that are life in Shanghai. If you like reading Johnson or Clarkson you will love reading this Funny, informative & honest account. Rob was fortunate to have met so many jokers & pranksters to lighten his load along the way. During my years there I never met any funny people at all
