Although Leni Reifenstahl has been vilified by some as apparently sympathising with the Nazis, this film shows just the opposite. Her imaginative directing, aided by the ingenuity of Hans Ertl her cameraman, pioneers many techniques which nowadays we take for granted, for example cutaways to crowd reactions to specific occurrences on the field, and the unusual and often intimate camera angles.
She actually shows Hitler in a poor light; indeed Hitler was none too pleased at the prominence she gave to the success of non-Aryans (e.g. Jesse Owens). The 1936 Olympics were intended by the Hitler regime to showcase the alleged superiority of the Germans, but the film subtly mocks all the posturing and ensures that success by other nationalities got their due place.
