5.0 out of 5 stars Great tips on restoring and cleaning pipes 12 April 2014

I enjoyed this book and have read it cover to cover about three times. It is a collection of very interesting articles with all sorts about pipe history. The section I found of most value was about buying old pipes on the internet auction sites and then how to clean and restore them. This was of great interest to me and the author has some great tips about what materials are safe and effective to use on the pipes. I have used his cleaning techniques on my own pipes to great effect. I think the book is good value and certainly has some great history in there as well as practical tips about buying and restoring your old pipe. Highly recommended reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Digital Mentoring from an Experienced, Generous Guide! 7 Jun. 2012
By Robert J. Bennett - Published on Amazon.com

Dave Whitney's OLD BRIAR is a wonderful guide to acquiring, cleaning, and smoking estate pipes (estate = used). It's a rudimentary guide with lots of wisdom and valuable information. The emphasis is not on the upper echelon of pipe collecting, but perfect for those of us who collect-and-smoke pipes on a budget. His premise is that with a little homework, knowledge, ingenuity, and some elbow grease, you can build a fine collection of pipes without spending money hand-over-fist. Mr. Whitney has built a reputable, longstanding business on eBay restoring and selling estate pipes. Yet he shares his knowledge and experiences freely and with enthusiasm. Just today, after gathering the modest array of items he suggests to clean and sanitize, I cleaned four pipes using his step-by-step instructions. Can't wait to try 'em out. It's terribly cliché I know, but absolutely true: if I can do it, so can you. This is not rocket science but there's no substitute for this kind of mentoring from an experienced hand. if you're intimidated like I am in these things, this is a great guide to get you on your way. Highly recommended and, as Father's Day is upon us as I write this review, a great gift for any Dad you know who enjoys his pipe and might be interested in the topic/hobby.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read for the enthusiast who can overlook some minor flaws and biases 18 Jun. 2013

The author is clearly quite enthusiastic when it comes to briar pipes, and especially so with regards to some of the American classic brands. It's not immediately obvious what the intended target group is. On the one hand, it sometimes seems to cater to those who are new to the pipe hobby but it also uses a fairly technical language that forces the uninitiated reader to look up certain words and phrases. The sections on buying and selling on eBay are perhaps a bit too extensive, considering that the actual refurbishing of estate pipes is not discussed in much details. Most of the book is a mix of the author reminiscing about pipe smoking in his youth, along with thorough sections covering the American pipe producers of the 20th century. It's an entertaining read for anyone interested in estate pipes, especially American ones, but it could have been considerably better with more thorough editing. It's not a comprehensive book for beginners, nor does it seem to cater to veteran pipe smokers. It's primarily a niche book for those who are interested in purchasing estate pipes on eBay. However, the rather charming, relaxed and personal tone that permeates the whole text makes for an amusing read for anyone interested in pipes and tobacco, the anecdotes alone are well worth the modest price for a Kindle edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! 16 Jun. 2011

This is a very enjoyable book on pipes, pipe smoking and some of the personalities, techniques, methods and histories of those who made, refurbish and smoke them. The author's warm writing style comes through quite well and his information makes this a practical while endearing read.

I read it with pipe in hand (an old 'estate' Greek Alexander full bent) and his writing has given me new appreciation for pipe styles which I had not previously considered. It also let me know that I'm not the only fellow who has had to find and fill his pipes on limited resources from time-to-time.

First half of the book was dedicated to buying/selling estate pipes. Good for those interested in buying/selling, or for those to get some history on some old pipes and pipe makers. Second half of book teaches the basics of pipe smoking. Good all round book on pipes.
