I have been running the 60GB Vertex II for a few months. The drive has suddenly failed and is now not recognised by the PC / BIOS at all. Data I had on it that was in between back-ups is lost. If you have any doubts about this just looks at the OCZ website - European customer sevice numbers do not exist, the forum is one big list of similar failures and the American returns / rebates system is clearly built to manage huge numbers of returns. I'm really suprised that Amzon would stock / sell such a dubious product. I will be trying to get a refund from amazon rather than paying to post my drive back to America for OCZ to decide if they will send me a replacement, that of course I don't want....

This drive has died 3 times so far, I have no faith buying from OCZ again, not just for the failure rate but the poor service.

I have no chance of getting any money back from this purchase as I've owned it for longer than 30 days and OCZ wouldn't cover the cost of sending the broken drives to be replaced which wasn't cheap.

The performance from the drive was great... while it lived it's short life.

Thought it best to leave some feedback on this drive, first one DOA, sent it back for a replacement the second one powered up fantastic, but took me 2 days to get windows 7 to install on the laptop even with the latest firmware on the drive. worked for about a week then started having problems laptop not booting up, this was due to the drive not showing up in the Bio's even on a different computer, so sent it back.

The improvement in speed after installing the SSD was more than I expected; from booting the machine to shutting it down again, all waiting was reduced to a fraction of when using the old drive. Until one day, four months after installing it, the laptop would no longer boot and the disk was unrecognised. Plugging the disk into another machine and using the OCZ Toolbox utility it still wasn't recognised, with a return to OCZ to only alternative.

The numerous seconds (and then some) the disk saved throughout is short life were then wasted reinstalling software, retrieving backups, and dealing with licensing issues (since a disk failure like this doesn't allow for doing a license transfer with software like Maya, etc.).

My 120gig drive just failed. I searched online and there is a significant amount of comment on such drives suddenly failing.
A previous 60gig OCZ drive I installed failed but then came back to life when removed and installed in an external drive bay.
No such luck so far with this one.
Online commenters talk a lot about a controller chip from Sandforce being to blame and suggest buying SSD drives that do not use this chip inside.

It's very disappointing because performance boost using these SSDs was amazing, then with no warning signs, drive not recognised.
If you do get one of these, use it as a boot drive where it will really improve responsiveness of system, but keep a regular backup and keep precious data somewhere else.

I got one of these (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) for my 15" Macbook Pro, to replace a 7200 RPM Seagate drive. The difference is performance is remarkable, particularly application startup, Photoshop CS4 and MS Office are snappy, and XP on VMware Fusion is no longer thrashing my system.

xbench reporting the following for the OCZ Vertex:

Disk Test 267.14
Sequential 159.36
Uncached Write 238.10 146.19 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 217.93 123.31 MB/sec [256K blocks]

I did some research before buying this drive and although I was concerned about reliability from other reviews, I decided to go for it.

The drive performed very well until it failed. I replaced a 5400rpm SATA in a laptop so noticed a huge difference. Of course it was silent and generated less heat. Battery life was improved and the fan ran less in my laptop. I was very happy.

Two months later, the drive failed catastrophically and I lost all my data. Even with good backups, the inconvenience when this happens is huge. To make matters worse, the experience I had with the OCZ support was poor. It is a ticket based system where you deal with a remote technician via messages posted on a web page. On average, they take 1-2 days to get back to each message that I post.

The final insult, I have to pay to ship the broken drive to the Netherlands before it can be replaced.

I strongly advise you stay well clear of these because your hard disk is such an important part of your computer, you need to trust it is reliable and you need to know that if you have a problem, you can easily resolve it.
