Product Description

Product Description

Written by senior examiners, this book has been written to match Units 1, 2 and 3 of the OCR GCE Computing specification (units F451, F452 and F453) and is endorsed by OCR. The content has been written and and laid out in an easy-to-understand manner, making use of a variety of methods to convey key learning requirements to students.

The book is split into four sections;

- the theory units, matching the breakdown on the specification;

- the examined tasks, which provide advice about how to approach the tasks and prepare for the exam; and

- examination technique.

Students will find this book invaluable in guiding them through both the theoretical and practical elements of the course.

Electronic versions of the units covered by this book and additional coverage of the A2 Unit 454 Computing Project is provided via a Dynamic Learning network edition CD-ROM (see separate entry). This provides students and teachers with access to additional resources such as tutorials, activity sheets and files that can form the basis of programming tasks, as well as a fully interactive edition of the book. The full Network Edition also provides teachers with the basis of a scheme of work and content that can be delivered to students with ease. It features teacher notes and additional resources, a Lesson Builder and full network licence.

2.0 out of 5 stars No conversations, and not many pictures, 14 Oct 2008
By GillyBee "bookaholic" (Southampton, England) - See all my reviews
Well, we have no choice - if we are teaching OCR's new spec, this is the book we have to buy. It's only just out, half a term after we started teaching the new specification, and perhaps it was a bit rushed in the end?

It's not enticing to look at - the first 33 pages are solid text, with not a single image, even when talking about DFDs and System Flow diagrams. An interactive disk, with more exciting stuff for students to do, is promised, and the same material will be available online, but neither of these is due to be be ready until March 2009.

This looks like A level-lite - certainly for AS students the content looks less challenging than the pre-2008 version, with unthreatening everyday life examples and analogies. But teachers using this Mk 1 version are going to have to work hard at supplementing the content, at least until next spring!

Doesn't really cover all of the syllabus, misses out one or two points which seem to appear in the exam.
