Charles Lyons is a brilliant writer. The topics are explained clearly and concise.
And often he complements with deep insight in the design considerations behind the APIs.
But there is a problem ...
On the front cover is stated: "Complete coverage of all objectives for the Oracle Certified
Expert Java EE 6 Web Components Exam 1Z0-899".
In the introduction on page XII he refers to "The JSP 2.0 specification (JSR 152)".
The problem is that in JEE 6 the relevant spec is "The JSP 2.2 specification (JSR 245)".
Unfortunately the entire scond half of the book is only compliant with the old spec.
Bottom line: the first half of the book is excellent and compliant with JEE 6.
The second half of the book is NOT compliant neither with JEE 6 nor with Exam 1Z0-899.
This reduces the value of the book. And in my opinion the statement on the front cover
should be categorized as deceptive marketing.

Good guide, concise and useful, but with some editing errors 26 Nov. 2012
By Edgar Maldonado - Published on Amazon.com

Reading this guide from begin to end and making some practices, I obtained a good score in the certification exam. The only complaint about it, is that some details in the practice exams had errors like bad indication of number of answers to choose, and one or two fine details about subtle changes betwen JEE5 and JEE6 that weren't updated in this revisión of the book.

OCEJWCD Study Companion by Charles Lyons 1 Oct. 2013
By Sebastiaan Heunis - Published on Amazon.com

This is a good book to buy if you want a summary of the content and objectives for the 1Z0-899 Oracle exam.

Pros:
- Provides a good overview of the objectives for the 1Z0-899 Oracle exam.
- I managed to pass the exam without really having to read the Servlet specification.

Cons:
- I wouldn't recommend this book if you don't have a lot of experience with Servlets, JSP and the Deployment Descriptor. I put this book down, read Head First Servlets and JSP, before coming back to this book. You need to know Deployment Descriptor syntax and how to deploy applications in Tomcat before using this book.
- Quite a lot of errors in this book, as well as problems with the review questions. The errata covers it though. I emailed the support team about an error that I found and their reply was to refer me to the errata sheet. They didn't confirm/deny the error or add it to the errata sheet, so I think the support on this book should be better.
- The free online exam that comes with this book does not cover the new Servlet topics.

This is a third edition of the book. It is quite solid overview of the Java EE web related stuff. A good cheat sheet for cert preparation. So the book will be useful to read.

No examples. 23 Jun. 2014
By Ben Hundley - Published on Amazon.com

This book is almost like reading the java api. There are no examples, no code snippets, no explanation of what might be the practical use of this stuff. And if you want to follow along and write some code yourself to solidify what you've learned in each chapter that doesn't work either. For example, to write even the most simple web application you need to know how to write a deployment descriptor. This book doesn't cover that topic until chapter 10. Basically it seems like this author just lists the interfaces, classes, methods one by one with a brief description of each one. If that's how you learn then great but I have a hard time thinking this is a good way to learn for anyone. For me, I need to code, I need to see examples, I need explanations of how this stuff might be used.
