Amazon.co.uk Review

The drama was poured on aplenty in the second season of The O.C. , as the sun-dappled denizens of Orange County found their lives massively upended and then some. At the end of the first season, the Cohen household had been reduced to two--parents Sandy and Kirsten (Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan)--as the boys had flown the coop, moody Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) back to Chino and goofy Seth (Adam Brody) for the wide expanse of the Pacific (somehow ending up in Portland, Oregon). Once the prodigal sons returned home, thanks to a lot of persuading, both tried to mend relationships with their former girlfriends, Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Summer (Rachel Bilson). While friendships were solidified, everyone was dating someone else: Seth was with sultry club manager Alex (Olivia Wilde), Summer with sensitive polo jock Zach (Michael Cassidy), Ryan with smart girl Lindsay (Shannon Lucio), and Marissa with her family's pool guy and a bottle of vodka.

That's just the first half of this year of The O.C. , and we haven't even gotten to the adults yet. Both Sandy and Kirsten found themselves tempted away by more-than-willing suitors, and wicked Julie (Melinda Clarke), Marissa's mom, cheated on new husband Caleb (Alan Dale) with ex-husband Jimmy (Tate Donovan). An extremely tangled web was woven, one from which the show almost didn't recover: the Lindsay storyline started out strong but went nowhere, Sandy's ex-girlfriend (Kim Delaney) was a bit of a bore, and the same-sex relationship between Marissa and Alex never really gelled. All seemed like sure-fire character additions, but it was the later peripheral characters, including Billy Campbell as a magazine editor smitten with Kirsten and the menacing yet sexy Logan Marshall-Green as Ryan's ex-con brother, who injected The O.C. with energy, and helped steer the show back on course. Brody, who became the show's de facto poster boy, got to show off his comedic talents with the wonderful Bilson (who rode the Zach-Seth-Summer romantic triangle most smoothly), and the heretofore sullen McKenzie got to lighten up quite a bit, until the show's violent yet effective season finale.

Forsaking a good amount of its comedy for drama, The O.C. got a little too seriously soapy, but its characters were so compelling you couldn't stop watching--even waiflike Marissa grew some edges. Clarke's scheming Julie was a constant pleasure to watch, and Rowan turned Kirsten's late-season downturn into a steely yet heartfelt portrayal. Despite the bumps, The O.C. remained one of the most exciting shows to look forward to week after week, a soap with smarts thanks to its fresh dialogue, gifted cast, and careening plot arcs. --Mark Englehart

Decription

There's trouble (and plenty of fun) in paradise in this 24-episode, 7-disc Season 2 collection of the smash-hit series set in Orange County's posh Newport Beach. Hook up with what's coming down as the Core Four romances of Ryan-and-Marissa and Seth-and-Summer may (or may not) go from very over to very on, Sandy and Kirsten face choices that could trainwreck their 20-year marriage, felon (and Ryan's brother) Trey gives Newport living a try, Julie's lurid past comes back to haunt her, and other new hunks and hotties become part of the coastal scene. Live. Laugh. Lie. Cheat. Grow. Share. Connive. Love. In California's beach paradise, they do everything under the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love, betrayal, and spring break with the Nanna!, 31 Dec 2006
By Kona (Emerald City) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Fans of The O.C. are sure to enjoy this Season Two DVD set. After last season's heart-tugging finale, the whole gang is back for season two: Seth and Ryan come home only to find their girlfriends have moved on and found new loves. The guys are no slouches, either: A new lab partner spells romance for Ryan, and Seth falls for the wild and worldly manager at the Bait Shop. Meanwhile, the adults are in for lots of drama as Caleb and Julie have marital problems, both Sandy and Kirsten feel the urge to merge with other people, and even the Nanna in Miami gets lucky...maybe. One main character will leave the O.C. for good, one will die, and one will shoot another.

What a season! The plotlines combine comedy and pathos effortlessly, the characters we came to love in season one continue to evolve, and the writing is superb. This DVD includes bloopers, lots of behind-the-scene cool stuff, and wonderful bloopers that were sadly missing from the season one DVD. I wish there had been commentaries by the lead actors, but there are two by the creative staff that are quite interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The OC getting better and better, 12 Dec 2005
When I bought the first season, I was so thrilled about the plot I couldn't wait for the second season to be released on DVD. I'm from Belgium and that's a problem if you are a die hard oc-fan, what I mean is that the oc isn't broadcasted at the same time the new episodes are released in USA on Fox TV. The only way I can watch my favourite show is by waiting till the DVD-box is released each year in august. But when it finaly is, my free time is dedicated to watching this show... It's amazing, it's real time television and gives you a different perspective on a world of wealthy people, who are, on a additional level not so perfect at all.
Josh Schwartz has introduced a different point of view comparing to the first season, you will notice that Ryan is changing, he starts by using his brain instead of his fists, wich was, in the first season, something that played a key role in the the previous plot. However it's not something I miss, because, now, I think the Ryan character is developping a responsible key role in the story, which sets a great example for teenagers with troubled backgrounds...
Some things have stayed as before such as, seth's irony and great search for a live without women issues. Marissa's unstable family conditions, the fact that she's still very fragile etc... Summer becomes more and more funny and has lost a little bit of her bitchy performance acts. Which, in my opinion, is something I miss... but she becomes a mature young woman instead.
Also the new characters are from a great worth in the second season. DJ, Alex, Lindsay, Zach, Rebecca, Jody, Carter, Trey,... In the beginning I was quit uncertain if those character could interfere, in a natural way, with the firm group of the magic four, but Josh made it look perfect...
To all of you who haven't bought or seen anything from this amazing show, now is your time to act, I can asure you, you won't regret this by far...

3.0 out of 5 stars Weaker than the 1st season..., 16 Aug 2005
OK, first of all, the second season is much weaker than the 1st. The intersting character with interesting storyarks disappear by mid-season, and we are back to the same old. What was interesting in season 1 is no longer intersting in season 2.

Also, the Region 2 version sucks big time, and there is only one pathetic commentary for one pathetic episode. And they even didn't bother to print a different cover box. On the back cover it states that there are 7 discs in this collection when there are only 6. The studio really couldn't care any less for the european fans, could it?
