Book Description

11 Oct 2012 Kinsey Milhone 14

'First there was a phone call from a stranger, then a letter showed up fourteen years after it was sent. That's how I learned I'd made a serious error in judgement and ended up risking my life . . .'

The call comes on a Monday morning from a guy who scavenges defaulted storage units at auction. Last weekend he bought a stack. They had stuff in them – Kinsey stuff. For thirty bucks, he'll sell her the lot. Kinsey's never been one for personal possessions, but curiosity wins out and she hands over a twenty (she may be curious but she loves a bargain). What she finds amid childhood memorabilia is an old undelivered letter.

It will force her to re-examine her beliefs about the break-up of her first marriage, about the honour of her first husband, about an old unsolved murder. And it will put her life in the gravest peril.

'Grafton's fans will be thrilled with this knockout Kinsey Millhone mystery . . . One of the very best entries in a long-lived and much-loved series' Publishers Weekly

Product Description

Amazon Review

Wise-cracking, staunchly independent and chronically curious, Grafton's gritty gumshoe, Kinsey Millhone is back. This time, the alphabet series star will take on the toughest case to date: her past. What begins as a random phone call from a "storage space scavenger" (buys the contents of defaulted storage units), leads Kinsey to a box of old papers and personal effects that her ex, Micky Magruder, left behind. Inside, she finds a 15-year-old unsent letter from a bartender that, among other things, reveals her former hubby was having an affair. And she left him because he asked her to lie when he was charged with murder. Although he wasn't convicted, the letter reopens the past and the possibility of foul play--which proves to be a deadly temptation for Ms. Millhone.

Die-hard fans will especially enjoy Kinsey's self-disclosure--something she's infamous for not doing--about her childhood, the fate of her parents and the randy details of her first marriage. She also reveals a very vulnerable and interesting side to her character when her obsessive-compulsive fact-finding is mixed with matters of the heart. A fast, fun read, O is for Outlaw is packed with Grafton's clear, colourful imagery and signature metaphors: "Our recollection of the past is not simply distorted by our faulty perception of events remembered, but skewed by those forgotten. The memory is like orbiting twin stars, one visible, one dark, the trajectory of what's evident forever affected by the gravity of what's concealed." This review refers to the hardcover edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a long way from A to Z - too long? 5 Oct 1999
Format:Paperback
When a writer of crime fiction runs out of ideas, he or she tends to let bad things happen to the detective or the detective's family. That's always a bad sign. So when Kinsey Millhone's ex-husband is killed, and she starts investigating out of sheer quriosity (and, perhaps, for old times 'sake), this should be a warning to the reader.
Sue Grafton sticks to her well-known routine in the O-book. Her heroine Kinsey Millhone jogs her 4 miles, lifts weights, eats junk food and makes notes on cards as usual. She breaks into the sealed houses of victims and suspects, and gladly puts herself in life-threatening situations, as in every book. She makes friends among lower-class people in about the same unrealistic way as Enid Blyton's Famous Five.
The only new thing about this book is that it is more clearly fixed in time, in the early eighties. Not that Grafton makes much use of it.
However, Kinsey's charm, sense of humour and her self-irony go straight into the reader's heart. So does her honesty:"If the bad guys don't play by the rules, why should the good guys have to?" Sue Grafton knows how to create a good story; it's just entertainment, but good entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Kinsey background material 31 Dec 2000
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
There are some good red herrings in this book, which she handles much better here than in K is for Killer. This is the most personal novel about Kinsey to date and I enjoyed the chance to find out more about her past and what makes her tick. Deception and false impressions are a strong theme of the book and make for a satisfyingly complex tangle to unravel.

If you have never read an of her books before I can guarentee you will love it. If you have read any of the previous novels you will love this also, a lot of loose strings are ties, old and new character are there. So wait no longer, pick it up and have a jolly good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! Kinsey Millhone continues to thrill 22 Sep 1999

Format:Paperback
Another First for Sue Grafton. The central plot takes you into Grafton's PI, Kinsey Millhone's, past. With each novel we seem to learn more and more about the PI and her background. This is cleverly done, as it gives the author more scope for future novels. In the latest alphabet novel, Millhone investigates her first husband's involvement in a murder, which took pace some 15 years ago. At the time, she could have cleared his name, but chose to go her own way. Now she has to admit that she may have been wrong, and someone is after her Ex. For me, I enjoyed every page of this book. I look forward to each new alphabet novel, and I have not been disappointed yet! Please can she hurry up wiyh the next one!

I look forward every year to the new 'Kinsey' adventure and I was not disappointed here. It was great to read some more about 'Kinsey's pastlife & first husband'. I also liked the preface from Ms Grafton, explaining about timings. I have sometimes forgotten aand wondered why Kinsey does not have a mobile and easy access to the 'net'. Not necessarily her best but definately a very good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series and unusual investigator 29 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another cracking tale by Sue Grafton featuring her irrepressible investigator, Kinsey Milhone. Part of the successful Alphabet series, this involves Kinsey personally as one of the victims is her exhusband whom she hasn't heard from for fifteen years. Whilst he lies in a coma, Kinsey has to delve into the past going back to the Vietnamese war.
