5.0 out of 5 stars Stumbled upon a Classic 22 May 2013
Format:Audio CD
This album consists of "field recordings" made between 1949 and 1952. The sound is raw and you can tell from the ambience that the recordings weren't made in a studio. It's very listenable and certainly not so flat and grainy that you can't play and enjoy it on a decent system. The performances are shot through with utter spiritual conviction - on the verge of becoming overwhelmed with the sheer righteousness of it all. I absolutely love it. On occasion the main voice will reach saturation point but again I can live with that as the "whole" is truly greater than the parts. It does indeed sound like it might be the soundtrack album to a film the Coen Brothers didn't quite get around to making. I found my copy in a thrift store in the US - the 79 cents plus tax I spent was an investment that brought dividends bordering on the dot.com bubble scale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great old time gospel 12 Jan 2008
By W. Wynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a awsome collection of old time gospel music that lifts the spirit. I haven't stop listening to this CD since I bought over a week ago. I only wish there were more old time gospel music CDs out there. I've been looking for some of the various artists on Amazon (Kings of Harmony, The Dixiaries), but with no luck. These artists must be very rare and I may have to check other sites or even old record stores for these groups. However, at least I have "O Gospel Where Art Thou" which I highly reccommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best old time gospel collections 12 Jan 2008
By Mark A. Parsons - Published on Amazon.com

This is one of the best old time gospel collections I have ever heard and has superb remastering. The production is really outstanding. I rate this along side the How Can I Keep From Singing series in content, but the sound is better. This is most highly recommended.
