Product Description

Product Description

The Russian uses his machine pistol like a scythe. Feldwebel remains standing for a fraction of a second. The rain of bullets pours into him, making him twitch violently. He falls to the floor. The Russian grins. There is no doubt that he is enjoying himself.

Sven Hassel and his comrades are ordered to take O.G.P.U Prison in any way they can, even if it means killing the Russians with their bare hands.

Armed with flame-throwers and heavy artillery, the 27th Penal Regiment plan their attack.

More About the Author

Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. When the war ended in 1945 he was transferred between Russian, American and French prison camps, and upon returning to Denmark, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for treason. He began writing Legion of the Damned during his time as a prisoner of war. His fourteen World War II books, which draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, have sold over 53 million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 50 countries. He peacefully passed away in Barcelona in 2012, where he had resided since 1964.

Not the book, the editing from paperback to digital book.
The spelling and grammar mistakes are very bad and that's the ONLY reason I have rated it so low.

I've read this book several times in paper back and its still a good read.

If not obvious from the title and cover! :-)

I read all Hassel's books as a teenager and in my early 20's. For blood and guts, gritty war tales they are great. I bought OGPU Prison (again - my original paperbacks long ago went to a charity shop, I think) just because it popped up somewhere on a screen on my Kindle as a nostalgia read. I've only dipped into it so far, but it is how I remember it. Well crafted characters that one kind of grows to like (which is odd when they are the 'baddies' - and often brutal and harrowing descriptions of warfare on the Russian Front.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hassel I dont mind 27 Dec. 2012

I'm a very lazy reader and Sven Hassel is pretty much all I read . This Danish born writter claims his fourteen books are based on personal experiences based on his service in the German army in world war 2 . If you have never read any of his work dont think they are extolling the virtues of the German army they more concern the battle for personal survival of a group of missfits in the war who could have fought for any side and didnt really care for the beliefs of their leaders but merely fought to survive .I have all fourteen books as paperbacks that are getting very tatty as I read that slowly that I read them all and can then start again so I was delighted to get a kindle and download them to it . I would wholeheartedly recommend all of his books to anyone likeing war books .

I am currently reading the Kindle version of Ogpu Prison. Whilst I am enjoying this
I have found that this version is littered with numerous typo, spelling and grammatical errors.
It is often the case with Kindle versions of books to find some errors but this is by far the worse
example that I have found.
This does not however detract from the excellent writing that can always be found from Sven Hassel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+++ 7 May 2013

Read about a factual based but fictional aspect from a german soldier's perspective. Fascinating and Sven Hassel manages to draw you in and keep you addicted! The only shame about all of his books is that they are not in historical order and the characters get a bit confusing as they are out of time sync.
