NYMPHOMANIAC 1

Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Jo, a fifty-something lady with a self-diagnosed addiction to sex, and no small amount of self-loathing. A similarly aged chap, Seligman, who's played by Stellan Skarrsgard, finds her sprawled one night on a rainswept street, her face covered in bruises. He takes the damsel in distress back to his home, and Jo suddenly starts to treat the stranger to a confessional of her extensive sexual history, going right back to losing her virginity as a 15 year old girl. What follows then is a succession of highly erotic vignettes, starting out with Jo and her best pal, as a couple of 17 year old girls, competing with each other to see who can copulate with the most strangers on a late night train...
This film is nicely shot arthouse erotica with a very studied and too leisurely pace. The film score is minimalistic and the cinematography is lavish. Jo's lack of sexual mores and boundaries is never really explained, it's just told as a chronological factual account, and overall she's an unsympathetic, dull and self-obsessed character.
Seligmann is far more interesting as the chief protagonist, an articulate and contemplative intellectual, who tries to puzzle out Jo's behaviour by comparing it with, inter alia, the lifecycle of freshwater river fish. There's a surfeit of colourful and entertaining psycho-babble, which overlays the medium-core scenes of masturbation, fellatio and sexual congress. However, for me, by far the best parts of the movie involve Jo as a little girl spending time with her father, played charmingly by Christian Slater, which I found very touchingly drawn, and more convincing than the seedy history of Jo's tawdry and unsatisfying encounters, with a long line of somewhat unprepossessing and rather anodyn men.

It was quite the surprise when my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati recently announced that it would be showing this (both Vol. I and II), starting this weekend and only for one week. I saw Vol. I and Vol. II on consecutive, and have posted my reviews of each of them under the separate Vol. I and Vol. II listings here on Amazon.

This particular combo set brings you the two Volumes in one handy package. Vol. I runs 118 min. and Vol. II runs 123 min, hence the total running time for this combo-pack is correctly listed at 241 min. There are no bonus materials of any kind on this release. If that is what you are intending to buy, by all means, go for it.

However, if you think you've seen all of Nymph()maniac with these two movies, you are mistaken. Nymph()maniac was originally shot as a 5 1/2 hr. movie. For various reasons, Von Trier's production company decided to release the movie into most international markets (including US theatres) as a two-parter of 2 hrs. each, with the intent of releasing the full 5/12 hr. movie at some point later in 2014 (presumably directly on DVD/Bly-ray), and supposedly with lots more explicit scenes deemed too daring for the theatrical release.

Bottom line: just make sure that what you are buying is in line with your expectations. If you just want Nymph()maniac Vol. I and II as you saw it in the theater, this combo-pack will do the trick. If however you want the full running time as originally intended by writer-director Lars Von Trier, you should hold out until that "Director's Cut" is released (supposedly) later in 2014.

Obviously I saw this at the cinema not the bluray so I can only speak of the film, please ignor the mass of bad reviews this is getting and give it a try, I really enjoyed it, it is long, it is painful to watch and drains you, but that's the idea, a lot of people are going to see this thinking it will be something it isn't and never could be, it is not a 4 hour non-stop polished Hollywood blockbuster, it is an experience, it will grab you by the balls one minute and the next plant a seed of an idea in your head and give you time to explore it.
Please give it a try bit don't think this is your 50 shades of grey feature film come early!

If you are looking for an easy film (sorry, correction, films) to help pass your boring Saturday evening that you would of most likely of spent watching Ant and Dec in some program, because lets face it they're everywhere. This isn't it. It would bring you into the early hours of Sunday morning! Good god it is long! In ways I thought it was good and quite touching in ways. But then I thought that explicit sexual things are just being thrown in just for a shock factor and putting an artistic twist on it without the film really going anywhere. It could of easily been put into a normal length feature film if you got rid of all the pretentious bull s***. I did not watch these films in one sitting, otherwise I probably developed bed sores, but watched it over two evenings. When it got towards to the end scene I did feel totally mugged! I had relatively enjoyed the films but then I had the rug pulled from under me and some swear words were uttered, I wont lie. So overall, it was good, but trying to hard and had a stupid ending.

I think like most I went into this film expecting it just to be just all about sex/nudity based purely on what I heard about the film prior to release. However the film was completely differen to what I imagined. Yes there are quite a few sex scenes, but the film is about much more than that. It is about the struggles of a woman with her addiction to sex and is a recount in a series of flashbacks from a young 15 year old girl to the present day. Really enjoyed this film and was pleasantly surprised as I had pre-conceptions going into the film, but I was glad to be proven wrong. Definitely worth your time.
