Grunge sci fi isnt my usual fare but Parrish Plessis and her world fascinate - as much for the picture of a future world that surely none of us could want but towards which we appear to be hurtling. The Oz setting and its 'Ozisms' (by the Wombat!) are appealng, the divide betwen rich and poor and the rampant tribalism alongside (well a few kilometres of instant death away) an antispetic wealthy class, a disturbing caricature of our own times.

Parrish herself is a reflection of the book, a multi layered personality alternately spitting venom and saving orhpaned kids. The revealing of the human side of Parrish is a thread that continues throughout and leavens the dark world that she inhabits. The author even manages to comment (if obliquely) on the desperate need humans have for a saviour in hard times...an accidental crowning with blood and chicken feathers is enough for Parrish to be elevated to 'Oya' status - a fact that comes in handy to her initially but a role she begins to grow into.

But all along...an alien being grows inside her. Here we have the wildcard and together with the twist in the tale of the love interest the appetite is most definitely whet for Round 2 of the fight for survival in 'The Tert'.

Fantastic Read 11 Feb 2004

I decided to buy the book after reading the first chapter on Orbit's website. The book lives up to its promise. Its pacy, action filled and the characters draw you in. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Explosive Charm! 28 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
There are a great many spec’ fic’ writers out there who will soon be quaking on their rung of the best seller ladder at the emergence of Marriane de Pierres! Nylon Angel is a spectacular debut and when you’ve read the book you’ll be as eager as I am to find out when Orbit are due to release the next one.

Parish’s world is borne from an untethered imagination, built on fantastic imagery, rich prose and dialogue as sharp as the main character. And no matter what shape your life is in, it will seem thankfully ordinary after you’ve read this book.

Parish seems to have a penchant for the darkest kinds of strife and an unwitting ability to make acquaintance with the worst characters you could ever hope not to meet. Her only drive is to claw back her life from the manipulating clutches of the gang-lord of the Tert. Yet despite a serious ‘kit’ and well-honed survival instincts that make Lara Croft look like an amateur, Plessis’ manages to leap from one inferno to another. You’ll be as exhausted as Parish if you take the ride and survive!
