Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Animals On Wheels' first album "Designs & Mistakes" was a challenging mixture of twisted, breakneck beats, weird electronic melodies and freaky vocal samples. To the uninitiated, it sounded like an aural mess--the musical equivalent of Jackson Pollock's avant garde paintings. Nuvol I Cadira the Animals' second LP--is in many ways the exact opposite of "Designs & Mistakes". It is clear, delicately crafted and very, very beautiful. The crazy breakbeats and experimental noises have been ditched in favour of crisp hip-hop beats, shuffling jazz percussion and sweet ambient melodies. The resultant music--bearing closest resemblance to the work of Autechre, Plaid, Plone and the Black Dog--is spacious and almost other-worldy. Sometimes the music feels like it¹s been recorded underwater--such is the lucidity of the sound. Yet at other times, the rattling percussion and spacey melodies evoke feelings of intense weightlessness. If you like your electronica to have its feet on the ground and its head in the clouds, look no further. --Matt Anniss

4.0 out of 5 stars Headphone Commute Review 1 April 2008
By Headphone Commute - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Another album that keeps popping up on my rotations is the last release by Animals On Wheels, Nuvol I Cadira, released on Ninja Tune's sub-label Ntone (originally named Ninja Tone). Animals On Wheels is a solo project of Andrew Coleman, whose last album, Tony Alva's Hair appeared on Cocosolidciti Records in 2005. Nuvol I Cadira, on the other hand is almost ten years old now. Yet, if this is your first listen, I promise you a collection of light, jazzy, and refreshing beats. Falling somewhere during the prominent years of output from Amon Tobin, Prefuse 73, and Squarepusher, Nuvol I Cadira (translated from Spanish to "Cloud and Chair" and named after a sculpture in Barcelona), is a trip through chilled out organic downtempo with an occasional broken jungle beat. Recently, however, Coleman has been tinkering with some robot sci-fi, "crumpet nibbling", electronic hip-hop, in collaboration with Mike King under a project which he calls Robots With Hearts. In 2008 we can also look forward to Coleman's soundtrack work for a video art project by Patrick Doan, Openland. The DVD release will include a separate audio CD featuring Coleman's work as inspired by this collaboration, distinct from the soundtrack. Recommended if you like Funki Porcini, DJ Food, Coldcut, Blockhead, DJ Krush and Bonobo. Favorite track: A Plus Tard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mr Coleman 28 April 2007
By N. Fisher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Andrew Coleman (animals on wheels) makes some really great electronic music.

Delicate but head nodding electronic percussion gently back floating melodies, with a consistently nostalgic/reflective disposition. While the tracks don't sound dense, there is still a lot going on, and the composition and production are excellent. Coleman creates more than just tracks, but moods, impressions, soundscapes.

His sound tends to the introspective, reflective moods, but still manages to impress the feeling of driving with the windows down on a summer day, or simultaneously watching rain during a thunderstorm. The production is highly polished, and much more deliberate than albums like DESIGNS AND MISTAKES. Much more like his more ambient stuff, but this has a distinct structure to it mostly.

Relatively straight forward, and with beautiful melodies, this album is a great one to pop in on a day off, or whenever.

So why 3 stars? (consider it 3.5)

First of all, 3 is good. 4 is GREAT, 5 is perfect.

Simply because on first listen, it probably just sounds like a well produced melodic album. But their is great intricacy to the CD, and it's one that deserves several deep listens. It might not cause revelations in the listener, but it's some dam* good music.
