5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable 29 Nov. 2012
Format:Paperback
This is an indispensable book for nurses and nurse managers, the author is erudite and well versed in the daily struggles facing nurses, especially those in leadership and management positions. As an RGN who took over a management position on an acute ward just over a year ago, I have found this book incredibly salient to many of the issues I have encountered, the prose is perfectly pitched and it is laid out in a way that allows quick reference when required. I couldn't recommend this book enough and I would advise any nurse, particular those about to start in a management position, to pick a copy up pronto.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a game changer! 18 May 2013
By Jason
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Moving from a primarily clinical role, the paradigm shift of running a ward is potentially mind-blowing, and not necessarily in a good way.
The new challenges that arise, concurrent with a new expectation on how they should be managed, can leave a previously confident practitioner floundering.
The skill-sets required for such a role do not inherently come from the the experience gained in one's years of clinical care. And yet, it is those years of caring that provide the foundation and intrinsic motivation to do the job to the best of one's ability.

The frustration I initially experienced at managing my ward was of one who performed well (at least I felt I did!) in one position, and crashing in the new one.

I was fortunate that I came across Jenny Thomas at this time.

This book is written by a ward sister for a ward sister/charge nurse.

Jenny's book talks to you directly. She knows how you are feeling, how big your challenge is. She's been there too.
She doesn't seek to console with platitudes of how everything will be alright. Rather she gets to the point, helps you prioritise and deliver.

From clarifying your responsibility at the outset, the book succinctly takes you through the role in a most practical way. My personal favourite is the section on ward budgets. I have yet to come across anything that better explains how they work. That chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

It's the one book I used to carry in my bag at all times. With the advent of the kindle version, I now have it on my phone too.

This book is essential reading for all existing or wannabe sisters. Get it, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 31 Dec. 2012

A Nurse's Survival Guide to Leadership and Management on the Ward

I found this book really helpful even though I am a physiotherapist, as I could not find any book in my field which dealt with the practical day to day management and leadership challenges of running a department within the NHS. I particularly like the down to earth, positive way it deals with complex issues in a challenging environment and making the best of yourself and your team ultimately for the benefit of patients.
I thoroughly recommend this book not only for nurses but also for allied health professionals.
