Book Description

In this warm and witty book, Jane Grant recounts her life as a trainee nurse in a busy 1950s London teaching hospital.

Jane, and her friends Mary and Phyllis, discover that both happiness and heartache can be found on the wards of St. Bernard’s Hospital. Before long they realise it takes determination and a sense of humour to deal with the colourful characters of hospital life – and that goes for the staff as well as the patients.

The young nurses gain their medical training under the watchful eyes of strict, but generally fair, Sisters and Matrons. They meet patients who are facing the biggest challenges of their lives, and share with them moments of bravery and fear. There are times of laughter, but also of tears.

There is romance too, as Jane and her fellow student nurses enjoy the attentions of the hospital’s handsome young doctors, falling in and out of love for the first time.

A Nurse’s Life is a moving and amusing account of a bygone era, brought vividly to life.

Pleasant and entertaining read. However annoyed on buying it to find it's a book I've already got, with a new title. It was originally published fifty years ago as Come hither, Nurse!, followed by Come again, Nurse! I wish that publishers would make it clear when they change the title of books that it has been done, I've several times bought a book only to find when I started reading it that i already have it

I loved this book, having trained as a nurse in 1960 it brought back a lot of memories, funny at times but that is how it was, a hard life as a student nurse but very rewarding and a very formative few years. most nurses will appreciate the contents

Being the age I am (77)yrs, I could relate to this life. My nursing days were full of black humour which I have retained, causing embarrassment all round! The author captures the era beautifully and I look forward to reading the follow-up books.

I`m very interest in hospital stories as I was training in the early sixties. I guess all hospitals had different policies re nights out etc. Personally this was more a story of her private life and not enough about the work on the wards etc

Having been a student nurse myself in the fifties I can really see the best side of this book. This gives my age away.
