Edie Falco stars as title character Jackie Peyton, a drug-addicted emergency room nurse in a New York City hospital. For Jackie, every day is a high-wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and her own indiscretions. The second season of the Showtime Original Series Nurse Jackie continues its look deep inside the complicated heart and soul of a functioning addict, a loving wife and mother, and a first-class nurse.

At the NY hospital, Nurse Jackie continues bending the rules to ensure patients receive the treatment deserved. Sadly she still secretly needs drugs to get through the day, this an increasing problem. How long before others find out?

Wry humour, which proves enormously appealing - thanks to fine scripts and superbly etched characters. Again Edie Falco shines as Jackie, her "less is more" style of acting a delight to behold - so much conveyed with the briefest comment, the slightest gesture. The whole cast is a joy in different ways - not least formidable administrator Gloria, best friend O'Hara, scatty Zoey, self-adoring Dr. Cooper (now addicted to Twitter and only too happy to be the face on the hospital's publicity posters - "IF LOOKS COULD CURE"). Likeable too is Jackie's family - daughter Grace seriously weird, goodnatured husband destined to have his patience tried.

12 episodes of about 25 minutes. Interesting bonuses about O'Hara and Cooper. A gag reel. Some may wish the commentaries to be more focussed, especially when four are contributing.

The series suffered from unhelpful scheduling, no doubt on so late because of the language. It deserves to be better known. Spared the frenetic, soapy aspects of some medical shows, this one has a charm and concerns people we grow to care about.

Recommended.

The premise for NJ is that Jackie is a nurse with a wavering moral compass. This continues throughout, with J making decisions that are downright shocking at times, but there is no doubt that this is a good person who does bad things, not a bad person. Her addiction to painkillers apart Jackie frequently breaks the rules, sometimes seriously, but without a doubt this shows the fallible nature of moral absolutes. However, during series 2 things start to fall apart for Jackie more due to her drug dependence and her 'dealer' showing himself to be less than stable and moral himself.

In addition her family are explored further, and to anyone who has kids Grace must look like a very troubled child indeed. There is no attempt to blame the parents and the way it is presented it is almost like 'she's just like that' but I have a sensitive child and he looks positively glowing with normality next to Grace. There are kids who are hyper anxious, but it is always about HOW their problems are addressed that makes the difference. But as this is telly of course her problems have to drag on.

I do like how Jackies outrageous rule breaking shows us that the rules are there to benefit no one deserving sometimes. Jackie commits serious fraud on 2 occasions (that I can remember), to benefit patients - if she were caught it would be the end of nursing for her, but as what she is doing is good and right and she takes that risk you are clear that this is a woman with one of the best hearts around.

I would describe the genre as comedy drama. That it is set in a hospital I find somewhat secondary. My kids love this, but many parents will find this entirely unsuitable for children as there are scenes of drug taking and sex, and lots of other less than suitable moments!

This series is peopled by the most wonderful characters brought to life by a group of actors that just compliment each other. It has the atmosphere of a big city hospital but each episode not only brings in characters from the street but follows the lives of the nurses, doctors and administrative staff with humour compassion and understanding of the human condition. It feels authentic from start to finish. I have watched series one and two and am waiting eagerly for series three. What else can I say its absolutely great. You laugh, you feel sad and you cant wait to find out the next thing they get up to. If one has to pick just one character to praise above the rest of the amazing group I would have to say that Edie Falco who plays the role of Nurse Jackie is the perfect centre for all the other characters to relate to. Her portrayal of someone caught up in the fast lane of life living it to the full but only with the help of prescription drugs is a sad indictment of society everywhere but even more so. Not only does she have to deal with her own problems but because of her nature gets involved in her patients' lives and while they are in her care she delivers not only the physical care that a nurse can give but also above and beyond to get them help!!! Oh that the National Health had more nurses like her...... or maybe not!!!! Anyway enjoy.

I loved Edie Falco when I saw her in "The Sopranos" and when Season 2 of "Nurse Jackie" was shown on TV I wondered how I'd missed season One.So,when tit appeared on DVD I got it at once. I was glad That I did as here, once again, the Americans prove that as well as making really BAD television they can make really,REALLY godd television. This is a series to which the name "soap" could never be applied. The characters are believable and even the actors with the tiniest parts are Pro's. A lot of criticism has been levelled at the makers of the series because the "heroine" is a drug mis-user. That is not the point. We all have problems and misusing prescribed medicine is common to many of us. In the case of Nurse Jackie she is an overworked, underpaid human being dealing with other peoples problems but not recognising her own.She has a lover despite the fact that she loves her husband. She loves her Lover despite the fact she has a husband. Oh what a tangled web we weave.... and the beat goes on!! Buy it!
