This DVD is basically a filmed interview with the great dancer himself with occasional additions of teachers and partners. Nureyev is just as he describes himself, mischievous and bloody-minded. He's a fascinating character whose humble Tatar beginnings would have betrayed the intelligent and gorgeous-looking man he became. His dancing and musicality was in his genes and he overcame immense obstacles (his father and ballet schools) to become a beacon for dance the world over. The tragedy of AIDS robbed us of his genius. I was lucky enough to see him once in performance ... many years after he had given up his high leaps ... but his grace and balletic genius were outstandingly in evidence. This EMI DVD is excellent.
