By Marshall Lord TOP 100 REVIEWER
We bought this after having found that both the TV "Numberjacks" programme and the first DVD in this series, "Numberjacks are on their way" were a big hit with my son and daughter, then both aged five.

There are a number of other "Numbersjacks" DVDs on the market now such as "Brain Game" and "Standing by to Zoom."

Unfortunately the television programme was sometimes scheduled a few minutes before my children have to leave to go to school, so the numberjacks DVDs were an excellent way to give them a chance to see the programmes without being late.

My children have watched both the numberjacks DVDs many times. My little boy even offered to get rid of all his other DVDs and videos (of Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, etc) and just watch Numberjacks.

The antics of the "numberjacks" who are pocket superheroes in the shape of numbers, are designed to keep children entertained while getting them interested in simple arithmetic puzzles, developing their powers of observation, and teaching them to spot patterns.

For parents: if you want to get your pre-school or infant school age child to start thinking about how numbers fit together, I can recommend this DVD. If you want to get them out of your hair for 30 minutes so you can tidy up the mess they've made, get a meal ready, or just collapse for half an hour's badly needed rest, I can also recommend it.

The plotlines are tenuous, the villains are feeble (one of them is a spoon, for goodness' sake!), the music is dire, the animation is pedestrian and the educational value is pretty minimal. However, my 3yo is obsessed by it and, if we didn't intervene, would watch it until his eyes bleed.

Very, very good 6 Sep 2010

I think that the people who did this are royalty. Honest. Doing this stuff is a noble profession. I think of Brian Cant from Play School, now so long ago, in a job which was anything but glamorous, doing wonderful work which will quite probably endure for as long as there are children - what a wonderful legacy!

And here, in the NumberJacks, countless artists and artisans behind the scenes patiently working out what will make a good narrative for little folks and look what you get - something like... I'm lost for words.

It's a beautiful thing to have done; to have been a part of.

My kids (number five and number six) have benefited enormously from this series. Jonathon (baby number 5) now knows all the square numbers to 144 or so, and is even sort of aware that some numbers can't be made into a rectangle. He's a wee bit away from the prime number theorem of course, but given a few years, who knows?

The Numberjacks do more than that. Their use of simple but very clear language has made precise a lot of muddy and incomprehensible use of words on his part, and corrected a lot of casual errors. There are innumerable instances of this. All it great fun - I haven't had to emphasise anything. The series has done so much for him.

The great triumph of the Numberjacks series is this - they have the most ridiculous characters, situations, and general things happening in each story, but they remain firmly and absolutely embedded in the real world - in reality. That is a rare trick to play succesfuly. More than that, in doing so, they go far further in helping children in understanding than Thomas The Tank Engine, or anything else that I have seen at least recently (but there may be other excellent examples that I don't know about).

This series now goes into the mid forties, and covers many quite sophisticated concepts.

At first, I wasn't impressed because it seemed too simple to be remotely interesting, but as time has gone on, how clever it all seems now. On this disk, of course, you get just the early episodes.

I totally recommend it to anyone with tiny children.

And the most sincere, heartfelt gratitude to all of those who have made it happen.
