The Bee Gees were a British singing group consisting of three brothers: Barry Gibb and twins Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. Not only were they successful in their own right, with seven Grammys to their name, their body of work has been re-interpreted by a huge variety of other artists, from Elvis and Dolly Parton to Billy Corgan and Feist. Of their 35 albums, 200 million copies have been sold, ... Read more in Amazon's Bee Gees Store

Product Description

They've penned UK No1's in each of four decades. They're the only song-writing team to have written hit singles in each of five decades. Ranked in the top five most successful recording artists ever, with Barry being rated as the all-time No3 record producer with the most No1 records (14) to his credit. The only recording artists to write and produce six straight number one singles. The first composers to have five songs in the Top 10 at the same time. Most covered writers ever with literally thousands of recorded versions of their songs. Seven Grammy Awards, members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in both the US and Australia and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Number Ones Album is a celebration of a lifetime of hits for Robin, Barry and Maurice. The one disc release contains 20 tracks, 19 of which have been No1's around the world with final track "Man In The Middle" included as a special tribute to Maurice, who passed away in January 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars After the Beatles and Elvis come the Bee Gees 4 Nov 2004
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The collection of number one hits by the Beatles was later followed by an equivalent collection by Elvis Presley. Both those collections limited themselves to British and American number ones. If the same rule had been applied to the Bee Gees, there would have been too much empty space on the CD, so the net was cast wider. They trawled the charts of Germany (World, words, More than a woman), New Zealand (I started a joke, Don't forget to remember) and Brazil (Immortality - some other Brazilian number ones have been omitted) as well as Britain and America. They had other number one hits in the Netherlands, Japan and Hong Kong but declined to use those, presumably because they had enough songs.
One song that wasn't a hit for them is Islands in the stream, the song they wrote for Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, who took it to the top of the American pop charts. On that basis, their most successful song is Woman in love - it appears to have been number one in more countries around the world than any other Bee Gees song, whoever performed by. It seems that they have not recorded their own version of the song despite there being several possibilities for gender-adapted lyrics. Of course, they couldn't compete with Barbra's version but it would be interesting to hear their version.
In the end, this compilation represents all aspects of their career although some great songs are missing from their folk-pop phase of the sixties and early seventies, First of May, To love somebody and Run to me are all omitted, along with Robin's solo Saved by the bell. However, seven tracks is a fair representation of this period on a single CD encompassing their whole career.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Collection Of Songs! 16 Dec 2004
By Martin A Hogan HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not to be excluded from the list of other artists that have released compilations containing only #1 songs, the Bee Gees have no problems. Although some of the hits didn't actually make #1 in the UK, some may have been #1 in several other countries, prompting it to be thankfully included here.
The song "Man in the Middle" is included as a tribute to the late Maurice Gibb. "Number Ones" features 20-tracks, adding cuts such as "More Than a Woman" and "Islands in the Stream," a 1983 No. 1 hit for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. If you buy this early, you'll get the limited-edition CD/DVD combo which includes rare footage of the Bee Gees performing "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," "How Deep Is Your Love," "Jive Talkin'," "Massachusetts" and "I Started a Joke" (from the U.K. TV show "An Audience With").
In this version, "More Than A Woman" replaces the USA versions "Lonely Days" and adds the tracks, "Immortality" and "Islands In The Stream", which are the same versions that are on "The Record".

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfit for purpose 6 Jan 2012
By enrico
Format:Audio CD
This CD contains great music but is rendered unfit for purpose because Reprise appears to have doctored the cd format so that it won't play on a PC. This should be unlawful. Some people only have a PC cd player and base their music system around it. Paranoid idiocy from record companies such as Reprise results in a product unfit for purpose, and anyone who finds they have bought such a cd should return it and demand a full refund. Unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted 20 April 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My wife's recent "big" birthday called for music from 60s/70s/80s and I realised the one omission from my many CDs was the BeeGees. So I purchased this and it was exactly what I required. Excellent list and quality.
