Have you seen the artists listed on this album?? It's enough to make one just purchase it for that fact alone!! Then take a look at the tracks! I am a firm believer in buying a cd for the tracks that I like! No point in buying a cd when you're going to skip this one and that one...No!! This is another one of those cd's you put in your cd player and let it run!
Whether or not you're in a bubble bath, driving a car, or cooking the Sunday Roast, put this cd on. You are immediately transported to the finest stages in the world...
The sound quality is EXCELLENT
The performance of the artists concerned is OUTSTANDING
The track selection is FANTASTIC...
From the lightest opera "Casta Diva", sung by the beautiful Maria Callas to the the more powerful perfomance of Bocelli/Terfel of the "The Pearl Fisher's Duet", beautiful; sung by Bjorling in his days gone by...
The wonderful humourous "Funiculi Funicula!" This transforms anyone with not a note in their head to the most confident of singers!! Even I gave it a bash, fair enough, mice were hanging themselves in the cupboards; still thoroughly enjoyed it...
Must say, well done to the young fabulous voice of Hayley Westenera, the quality and clarity of her voice is one of a natural born singer, to the perfect voice of Roisin O'Reilly.
To the all time favourites, such as The Operababes(!), Bond, Russell Watson... and the list goes on and I could go on....
One of the best albums produced to date..
Let's hope they bring out a 2005 album and include more tenor trios; Celtic Tenors would be a great asset to this album; definetly like to hear more of Roisin O'Reilly, and of course not forgetting Josh Groban, his wonderful performance of "Gira Con Me" would also be a great addition to the next album of this calibre..

The 2003 release in this annual series (always titled one year later, just like children's annuals, because they come out in time for Christmas) provides a nice sample of the most popular classical crossover music of the year although not all of it was new that year. The music in these compilations doesn't fit my former stereotypical idea of what classical music is all about. It mainly features vocalists but they don't necessarily sing traditional operatic pieces though some do. Often they sing covers of pop, folk or gospel songs, albeit in an operatic style. The few instrumental tracks here feature soloists rather than symphony orchestras. The credits give pictures of album covers together with titles and catalog numbers to tempt you to pick out your favorite artists and buy their individual albums.

The featured artists here include Hayley Westenra, Luciano Pavarotti, Bryn Terfel, Sarah Brightman, Aled Jones, Lesley Garrett, Nigel Kennedy, Charlotte Church, Russell Watson, Bond, Renée Fleming and Placido Domingo among others. Highlights among the tracks include While my guitar gently weeps (performed by Nigel Kennedy), Shenandoah (performed by Bryn Terfel), Your song (performed by Julian Lloyd Webber with Elton John), She moved through the fair (performed by Izzy) and Hymn to the child (performed by Paul McCartney).

This series is aimed at those who don't take classical music too seriously, but who like to dabble in it. On that level, it works brilliantly.

This fine compilation is effectively a sampler of recently released albums from well known names in the light classical field, some of them from the "new wave" of singers and performers whose style and arrangements are blatantly aimed at the "crossover" market, people who would not normally buy classical music.
Fortunately some restraint has been excercised by the compilers, so we are spared, with one or two exceptions, the worst excesses of the genre that feeds Classic FM-TV's video jukebox. So this is a collection that is relaxing without being soporific, and is varied enough to cover most of the bases - from the shiny new Hayley Westenra to a 50-year old recording of the late Maria Callas, and from the gorgeous Angela Gheorghiu's "Ave Maria" to John Williams' score for "Harry Potter".
Forewarned is forearmed, and I would just mention the "one or two exceptions"; much as I like Nigel Kennedy normally, his version of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" adds little to the original, is rock music and is totally out of place here. Julian Lloyd-Webber and Elton John's "Your Song" is depressingly funereal; and the Bond track is discoid Karl Jenkins, just about as far away as you can get from classical music.
Most of the rest are sublime. Relax and enjoy.

Fabulous collection of popular classics in 2 discs. If you like excerpts of well known classical pieces sung or performed by famous and talented people go buy this. There are 2 cd's with 20 "hits" in each disc. Relaxing music for those long journeys especially if the car radio is not entertaining. I bought several different collections for the house and car - some of the music is repetitive but I don't mind listening to the same thing twice.

I have a few of these compilation albums and they
give me an insight into some artists I haven't either
heard of or heard sing. I love the mix of music and songs
