Product Description

Barney Delaney is 13. He also has Cherubism – the rare genetic condition which disfigures the face and causes all kinds of problems. On top of this, he has a mother who is often tired and unwell and a father who is nearly always away working.

It's not easy being Barney Delaney, you know.

But now forget the negative things for a moment, because in this boy's world, all that's secondary: for Barney, you see, nothing in the world matters as much as Cryptozoology – the search for animals which are considered to be 'legendary or otherwise non-existent by mainstream science.' So, when the excitable enthusiast finds himself confronted by something truly unbelievable, he's 100% certain that his dream of becoming the world's number 1 Crytpozoologist has just made a massive step forward!

Then things turn weird...

...What starts out as a simple mission for Barney and his best friend Wonky soon transforms into a series of bizarre twists and obscure mysteries – things which are embroiled and entwined somehow with the always difficult adults. Not to mention Wonky, who is acting strange and worryingly girlish. But then, he isn't surprised by that. Would you be if you were a 13 year old boy?

Not that Barney Delaney would ever let these obstacles stop him! No, he's going all the way, make no mistaking...and by the time he's finished everything will make perfect sense, and whatever dark secret is hidden will be brought to the surface whether it likes it or not!

An adventure book for both adults and teenagers with a penchant for discovering, The Number 3 Mystery Book is a darkly humorous investigation into the search for truth and what it means to accept your fate. As well as that, it's a tale about the pain of learning to love and forgive in the face of adversity, and how, when it comes right down to it, friendship matters more than anything.

A note from Mr Pink: although Cryptozoology is a central theme in the book, don't worry if you have absolutely no interest in Nessie or Bigfoot – there's hopefully plenty more other stuff in there to keep you entertained!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very original story. 69p very well spent!!, 7 Jun 2011
This review is from: The Number 3 Mystery Book (Kindle Edition)
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this book. What I found was a peculiar tale from the view of a 13 year old boy with Cherubism (he has a big face), who is obsessed with cryptozoology (mythical creatures). Not just faced with his own disfigurement, our hero Barney must also deal with his ill mother and distant father. It's not all bad news though, as he might just have the find of the century on his doorstep.......

I found that what this book does particularly well is to capture the glorious exuberance and optimism of youth, yet juxtaposed this is a very truthful portrayal of a struggle with disability, and how this effects the people around you.

The tone shifts breathlessly from funny and fantastical to utterly, crushingly heartbreaking. Personally, I did sometimes find the dramatic change in pace a bit much. There really is a lot going on in this story, and perhaps this first time author is at times over ambitious combining disparate themes, but for the most part the book fits together as a whole.

What the author does succeed in is to challenge your perceptions and expectations. Many times in this book I assumed I knew where things were leading, only to be left dazed.

Ultimately, I couldn't help but be won over and to root for the protagonist, who is essentially a very funny kid, with some wild ideas, who happens to find himself in a variety of sticky and challenging situations. The further I got, the more I wanted him to find what he was looking for.

I very much enjoyed this book, I've honestly never read anything quite like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The number 3 mystery book, 7 July 2011
This review is from: The Number 3 Mystery Book (Kindle Edition)
Well, what can I say?!

This book is immensely fantastic!

It's one of those books that you just cannot put down! The story is brilliant and exciting and sad and happy and makes you laugh too. So many emotions in one book, Chris is a genius, his writing is stupendous.

I'm not going to go into the story itself because it will spoil it for you, but I will say that you will laugh and you will cry. The main character in the book makes you pity him and want to look after him all at the same time.

I read the book over three evenings and ended up reading until 2am this morning because I simply had to carry on and finish the story.

Reading about how Barney felt about his Mum and her disabling condition hit home as I realised that this was how my children possibly saw me. I felt sorry for both Barney and my own children all in one go.

I highly recommend this book and insist that you buy it right away. This book should have a price tag in the pounds, not pence! I usually only read Pratchett so Chris had a hard job of writing up to Pratchett's standards. He succeeded in every aspect, I am most impressed, the story was amazing, I am still in awe and kind of wish I hadn't finished the book, as I now have no more Chris Pink to read.

Buy it and read it, you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing read and a great debut, 7 Jun 2011
This review is from: The Number 3 Mystery Book (Kindle Edition)
This is the debut novel of a new, young writer called Chris Pink, and as first novel's go it's a very involving one. The Number 3 Mystery Book was also the first eBook I ever read on my brand new Kindle and it was so good I read it in the space of two days! I surprised myself in truth. I loved it.

I didn't expect to get so caught up in the life, dreams, trials and tribulations of a 13 year old boy with Cherubism, but I did. Chris Pink captures the inquisitiveness, pig-headedness, fears, confusion of a young teen really well but without for a second being patronising. The story about a boy called Barney being determined to make his mark on the world as a Cryptozoologist, in a blaze of media glory, by unearthing an amazing, giant, never before seen animal in a local farmer's pond is told engagingly. It's a story about the consequences of your actions.

The characters are larger than life and Chris Pink doesn't shy away from tackling difficult topics such as disabilities and illnesses. This is quite a brave thing to do when the novel which is essentially a drama laced with lots of humour will appeal to a young audience. The protagonists are unconventional to say the least, but that makes it unique and frankly much more interesting. I think teens will love it, but I loved it too and I left my teens behind a long time ago!

It's a book with bite for sure, Barney is confrontational and his best friend Wonky is very feisty - and to quote Barney 'Wonky has what's called an abrasive personality'. But it made me laugh and cry. And also reminded me of my ardent desire as a child to see mythical creatures in the streets of my sleepy corner of London. Maybe we all need reminding of the beauty in believing in the unusual and having dreams that are larger than life? A really good read, I highly recommend it.
