Book Description

I remember learning all kinds of tricks when I was young, but not how they worked - possibly because the people who showed them to me didn't know either.

Teaching children new skills and tricks certainly stimulates them, but if you go no further you are doing them a disfavour. Inquisitiveness is natural to a child, but it has become an essential weapon in the armoury of an adult. One of the aims of this book is to encourage children to dig deeper every time they learn something new.

Number Magic is the second book I have written for my elder granddaughter, a lively 8-year-old who loves everything, from mathematics and painting to ski-ing and playing the piano. An avid reader, she was over the moon a few months ago to find that I'd written a real Kindle book - Secret Writing - specially for her, but told me she wanted to finish the second Harry Potter book before starting on it.

I am sure the world is full of boys and girls like her, whose parents are always looking for ways to challenge and amuse them, so I offer the Grandpa Mike KH series as challenging books for those who are still too young to tackle Martin Gardner or Simon Singh.

Young children gain knowledge and skills so rapidly that they quickly outgrow a lot of their books. I have deliberately structured Number Magic so that the young reader can skip the difficult bits, trusting that their innate curiosity will make them return to tackle them later. This also means that the book has enough real meat in it to appeal to quite a few adults. For instance, can you easily add two long numbers in your head? Or do you understand number-based card tricks well enough to modify them?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Fun! 9 Jan. 2015
By Sara L.
Format:Kindle Edition
If you have a young son (mine is 12.) who likes numbers, math and magic, I promise this book is totally worth the download. The author gives alternate ways to figure out many types of math problems rather than in the conventional way you and I learned. He found that to be challenging and enjoyed trying to do his own math homework using the books techniques. The book starts out with some cute but corny jokes, which when it comes to math and numbers I appreciate. The best part of the entire book, for my son anyway was the instructions on how to do a few card tricks. He absolutely loved this aspect of the book and has been running around showing everyone his new tricks! This book gives kids and adults new choices on how to figure math problems but also encourages problem solving skills. I would definitely buy it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning Guide From Grampa Mike! 8 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Number Magic is the second book I've read by fun-loving numbers master Grandpa Mike! lol I'm not afraid to say numbers isn't my strong suit or my usual venue for fun. However this book is lots of fun, and it's neat understanding how these number tricks really work. Of course my kids were all over this stuff cuz they're better than me with numbers!

Bottom line is, this is a fantabulous teaching aid that'll make numbers learning fun! Great tricks to have up your sleeve for a rainy day too.

My recommendation is you read this book and let Grandpa Mike know what you learned! Nice Job!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational 9 Jan. 2015

if you have bright youngsters in your family, chances are you are going to have to put in some time to stimulate them, because the school system isn't really geared for that these days. So Grandpa Mike's number magic books are great tools, because they pitch quite complex and challenging mathematical problems by making them fun, like games you can play with the kids. All these exercises involve problem solving, and kids love to be challenged. Some of them also involve food, which is an added bonus for the grow-ups too! So five stars for being at once entertaining and educational.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun 16 Jan. 2015

When I was a child, I had an uncle that would test me with math puzzles. I greatly enjoyed them and gained valuable knowledge about math. When I saw this book, I was excited because I can teach my son to appreciate math in the same way that I was brought up. I read and tested the puzzles and they were very unique. I had not done them before which made me happier.
