If you are looking for optical character recognition software then OmniPage Pro 16 is probably the product of its type. It can digitise large volumes of documents, scan existing documents and convert PDFs and other "locked" file formats to commonly used filed types like Word. However, it is not cheap and is therefore more suited to business users, or personal users who deal with substantial amounts of documentation.

I used the software to scan in a screenplay, which I wanted in PDF format. I found OmniPage Pro 16 scanned and converted it very accurately and retained the original formatting, although what were originally tab indentations were converted to multiple spaces. I have seen other screenplays converted with OCR software and the results have, to say the least, been hit and miss. But I read through a good portion of the final PDF and found virtually no errors. The half an hour it took to make corrections was about a week less than it would have taken to type the whole thing in by hand. As I said above, for personal users like me who deal with significant page numbers this software is very, very useful, but mostly I imagine it is useful for paper-free distribution of documents in corporate work.

OmniPage Pro 16 can create PDFs from your other documents, but don't purchase it purely for that function, as there is other, cheaper software that can convert to PDF with as good results.

The WorkFlow Assistant may be useful to users who use want automated functionality, to ease what can sometimes be a laborious process, but I imagine it depends on the quality of the original material if it's a printed source as to how much control you want to have.

I'm sure I haven't got the most out of this software, but for my purposes it worked pretty near perfectly.

I've used Omnipage for several years, mainly version 14 to convert text, pics etc to editable format and mainly to convert to pdf and send to clients.

This verson is better, it seems to be allot faster and allot more accurate than previous versions. Also, I have found this little monster consumes allot of memory and you need a good CPU to run it at efficient speeds.
The nice thing about Version 16 is it is multilingual as well, and can recognise and work with over 100 languages. I usually copy allot of text and this works a charm in other languages; like mandarin etc. Also the inclusion of PDF Create 4 you can also take your own documents and turn them into PDF files for distribution. Another nice feature is that it has support for MS Office 2007, so for professionals this is a great choice and is very easy to use.

All in all with the batch processing and conversion tools in version 16, this possibly makes it the best package out there. It's not cheap, but to be honest this package is aimed mainly at professionals. As for home use you are better using the OCR software provided by your vendor.
I know in Insurance companies and travel industries this is the software of choice. It is super fast and vey accurate.

If you really need the best then you look no further, this is the only product to use.

A problem we can all have is too many documents floating around. OmniPage 16 and the added PaperPort 11 makes document management is straightforward. Not only this but OmniPage Professional 16 can now use Batch Processing and also Automatic data extraction from documents into CSV files for database or Excel use.

With the speed achievable using OmniPage Professional 16 on dual-core processors and the new easy to use innovations I would rate this program very highly. If you rate ease of use, productivity, convenience and accuracy along with up to date integration and compatability high on your list, you will almost certainly become a fan of this. A very handy piece of software, especially, I imagine, if you're a business user.
