2.0 out of 5 stars User-friendly but (almost) Useless, 23 Feb 2004

(REAL NAME)
Setting up is slightly painful, but once started Omnipage is really easy to use. Converting a scanned document to a Word or Excel file is very simple and the addition of automating tasks might help some people, but really the process is so straight-forward that most people will just do each step manually.

However, the software fails on the most important aspect - accuracy. There's nothing wrong with the OCR, but the resulting layouts are a mess. Anything except the simplest of documents comes out higglety-pigglety, and you spend so much time rearranging everything that you soon realise that you'd be better off with a bog-standard OCR package and do the layout yourself. Scanning to Excel files produces cells where all the text is not visible, and resizing these cells produces knock-on effects which spoils another part of the document. Scanning to Word documents puts text in some odd places, often putting text from the beginning onto the next page.

I've read good reviews of this software (e.g. PC Pro) which professed good results. I don't know what kind of documents they tested with but they couldn't have been anything like mine.
