Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While the idea of a concept album inspired by the cult horror film The Wicker Man isn't initially a particularly exciting prospect, with Nuada, Candidate create a brooding beauty of a record that doesn't rely on prior knowledge of the movie. Blending the late night simplicity of their debut, Taking On the Enemy's Sound with the more accomplished folk stylings of their second, Tiger Flies, the London four-piece create some sumptuous acoustic pop to explore notions of tradition and community.

"Sowing Song" could be The Byrds right after hearing their first country tune, while hints of the Beta Band, Beck circa Seachange and the protest singers of the late 1970s all help to create a sense of another world in another era. For those who do know the movie, it's possible to follow the narrative thread, although this album is more about themes (fertility, isolation, temptation) and moods than the specific story. Highlights include the sumptuous harmonies on "Beautiful Birds", which the band describe as a medieval "Witchita Lineman" (and with good reason) and the tender lament of "Save Us", which sounds like people stuck on the edge of nowhere praying to the skies for salvation. It's excellent. --Ian Watson

Candidate are the great unsung heroes of the British music scene and if you haven’t caught up with the band’s work yet, then Nuada is the perfect introduction.
The new record is the group’s third album – a successor to last year’s heart-rending and beautiful Tiger Flies. Nuada is subtitled “music inspired by The Wicker Man,” apparently one of the group’s favourite movies. This means even more atmospheric, folkey moments than usual, as well as some intriguing lyrical references to the unusual 1973 British cult horror film.
But you don’t have to be a movie buff to enjoy this record. The concept of the album is eclipsed by some impossibly catchy tunes, with Sowing Song and Beautiful Birds as prime examples of the kind of soaring, sing-along acoustic pop that Candidate do best. Special guests on the album include Jason Hazeley from Ben & Jason as well as folk legend Bert Jansch. And, as an additional bonus, the CD also features a 12-minute documentary that the band made when they visited the Scottish locations used in The Wicker Man as inspiration for the music.

Inspired by a cult classic, this album really deserves more than remaining a secret for the few.

This is my one and only Candidate album, but I shall definitely be adding their other releases to my wish list. Equal parts intense and playful, this really is what modern acoustica/ folk should be about. It lends from the old but always keeps a foot firmly in the new.

Wonderful vocals with a genuine warmth and emotion. Up there with Gravenhurst. Good stuff.

Bought this yesterday, arrived today playing it now for the sixth time absolutely love it. Although The Wicker Man happens to be one of my favourite films as other reviewers have suggested it is not essential that you know the film.
The album is at times folky, poppy, (in a good way) even jazzy. An album of well arranged foot tappingly good very accessable songs. Buy it listen and enjoy I promise you will not be disappointed. Going to buy some more.
