"Sowing Song" could be The Byrds right after hearing their first country tune, while hints of the Beta Band, Beck circa Seachange and the protest singers of the late 1970s all help to create a sense of another world in another era. For those who do know the movie, it's possible to follow the narrative thread, although this album is more about themes (fertility, isolation, temptation) and moods than the specific story. Highlights include the sumptuous harmonies on "Beautiful Birds", which the band describe as a medieval "Witchita Lineman" (and with good reason) and the tender lament of "Save Us", which sounds like people stuck on the edge of nowhere praying to the skies for salvation. It's excellent. --Ian Watson
