Book Description

22 Nov 2012

They’re above the law and they’re watching her every move…

A compulsively readable thriller, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Peter Robinson.

The lines between good and bad are indistinguishable…

On the North Wales coast two people traffickers are brutally murdered; a drug dealer is mown down in inner-city Stockport and in a remote Pennine cottage a police informant is shot dead. Seemingly random, these murders are the work of one professional hitman.

Reluctantly, Marie Donovan takes on another undercover role and finds herself working with DI Jack Brennan, a high-flying detective with a tarnished career. Soon, mistrustful of each other and their superiors, both begin to suspect that they are mere pawns in a complex game of criminal rivalry and police corruption.

As Marie struggles to uncover the truth, she realises that nothing is as it seems. With every move, she draws the threat ever closer until ultimately the killer is watching Marie herself. Out on her own, she finds herself with no friends, no-one to trust and nowhere to hide.

Review

‘A talent to be reckoned with … A strong story line, muscular prose and a real sense of pace; this is a police procedural for a new age’ Daily Mail

‘A relentlessly exciting debut crime novel.’ Hull Daily Mail

‘An atmospheric and exciting roller coaster ride through an investigation into police corruption … right up there with the best police procedural thrillers of the last few years.
Expect to hear much more of Walters in the future.’ Mark Timlin

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, packs a punch, decent thriller 15 Dec 2012
By It's Only Me TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Nowhere to Hide follows on from Trust No One. I haven't read Trust No One but didn't struggle to get straight into the plot of Nowhere to Hide. Obviously there are a few gaps in the back history of the characters and plot if you don't read the books in the proper sequence, but Alex Walters does a good enough job of linking them together to prevent any major holes. This is an enjoyable, strong, masculine thriller with a lot of cat and mouse, violence and police procedure set against strong themes of trafficking and assassination. I was happy to find a crime thriller set in Wales, makes a refreshing change from Glasgow, London and Belfast where most books of this genre seem to be set. I particularly enjoyed the dialogue which is constantly choppy, sharp, believable and helps to add a lot of pace to the plot though, to be honest, Nowhere to Hide's packed with enough energy and movement you'll never feel bored. The characters of Marie Donovan and DI Jack Brennan are well worked. They're troubled individuals packed with self doubt, both out on a limb and there's a real sense that at any moment one of them could have a complete meltdown. The plot remains strong throughout as layer upon layer of murder, secrecy and police corruption is explored and ultimately, it's Marie Donovan who becomes the catalyst for the final twist. A generally sound thriller, easy to read and packs a punch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-paced and gripping 12 Dec 2012
By Emmsy
Format:Paperback
A smart narrative that kept me guessing. I found the central character engaging and enjoyed trying to work out who were the good guys and who the bad. I listened to this story on audio and initially found it hard to keep on top of all the names, but as soon as I got my bearings I was gripped. An intelligent, strong thriller, and I'll definitely be looking out for this writer's next book.
