Product Description

Product Description
It's a daily part of life and has been around as long as man himself but in the modern world it's kept from sight. Until now, that is, in this encylopedia of all things toilet-related. Subjects covered include: a history of the toilet from ancient Mesopotamia to loos in outerspace; chamber pots; urinals; cesspits and sewage systems; Victorian toilet bowl magnates and inventors; the physiology of the bowel movement; strange and interesting phenomena; cultural differences from around the world; types of toilet bowl; the language of the loo; the history of going on the move; the toilet's place in the culture of rituals of the world's religions; and the world's worst loos from China to Glastonbury.

About the Author
Stephen Arnott was born in the Caribbean in 1964. Since then has used the toilet facilities of more than 40 countries on four continents, however he has spent most of his time in leafy North London. After graduating from Keele University, he worked for a number of multinational companies before taking the plunge as a freelance writer. Starting out as a comedy writer for broadcasters such as the BBC, LWT and Granada he later branched out into factual feature work, writing on a wide range of subjects for professional and consumer publications. His other publications include a book of the world's weirdest proverbs, forthcoming from Prion.

This is both a fascinating account of the history of toilets, but also a most useful guide to maintaining good health of the bowels. I only wish the book had gone into much greater detail on the historical notes as they are just a summary, being as there is so much information to pack into one little volume - ideally it should have been twice as long as I just couldn't put the book down.
