A true-life Heartbeat for the twenty-first century.

Product Description

A true-life Heartbeat for the twenty-first century.

Yorkshireman Mike Pannett has just taken up a new posting as a local bobby in rural North Yorkshire. It’s quite a change from the Met, where he dealt with riots on the capital’s streets and drug gangs in Battersea, and found out what it was like to stare down the wrong end of a sawn-off shotgun.

Now, instead of hunting down knife-wielding muggers, he’s chasing runaway bullocks, holding up the Last Night of the Proms traffic to escort a lost mole across the road and combing the countryside for the villains who stole the Colonel’s balls.

Mike’s first year on his new patch is told in seventeen chapters which interweave his escapades on the beat month by month together with his growing knowledge of a landscape that changes with the seasons and some snapshots from his off-duty life.

Here is a wonderfully entertaining celebration of North Yorkshire, its breathtaking scenery and wide variety of characters and communities.

More About the Author

Mike Pannett was born in York, and joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988. He became one of the youngest officers to be given his own patch, and served on the Divisional Crime Squad, Murder Squad and TSG (Riot Police).

He transferred to North Yorkshire police in 1997 as he missed the countryside - and fly fishing! He became a rural beat officer and eventually, a wildlife officer. In 2005 he starred in the BBC's Country Cops and was inspired to write about his adventures in the North Yorks force.

Mike served nearly twenty years in the police, during which he became one of the highest commended officers. Following the UK riots in 2011 he has become a key spokesman on current policing issues in the UK, giving extensive interviews on national UK radio and television. He lives with his wife Ann, who is still a serving police officer, and their three children in a small village in the shadow of the North Yorkshire moors.

Being married to a Yorkshire city/rural Bobby for over 30 years I just couldn't resist this, and I wasn't disappointed. It brought back wonderful memories. He's just so spot on! Who wants misery rubbish publishers keep pushing at us? This book made me smile and left me feeling good to be alive. More please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put this down! 31 May 2008
Format:Paperback
I had a hunch when this book arrived through the letterbox that I would enjoy it, and I was not disappointed! It was enjoyable on so many levels. As well as immersing you in the world of a northern bobby it paints a wonderful portrait of the part of the Yorkshire I love and in which I grew up. At times touching, gripping and hilarious, Mike Pannett truly is a modern day James Herriott. I haven't enjoyed a book so much since I was a boy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Policing in the wilds of Yorkshire 23 Aug 2008
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Written in a conversational style the book takes you right into a year in the life of Mike Pannett who moved from the Met back to Yorkshire where he was born and bred. His narrative points up the difference between policing in the city and policing in the country. Many of the villains are respectful and wait to be searched rather than legging it when they see a police car. He has striking success in dealing with the drugs problem in the area and is soon respected and feared by the local villains. There are incidents both amusing and tragic to keep you reading, and the author's love of the countryside comes over well. I enjoyed it, whilst finding the dialogue a bit irritating as much of it is written how the locals speak and almost needed to be read aloud to be understood. That said the whole book was interesting and entertaining and a welcome addition to the many books about working lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Yorkshire brilliance! 18 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
I received this book for my birthday from my Yorkshire-based Uncle who has always tried to jokingly persuade me that Yorkshire is better than Edinburgh; whilst, of course, I have attempted to point out all that Edinburgh has that Yorkshire does not, in an equally jovial manner!! It has long been a standing joke between us, with books being past back and forth every birthday and christmas of a geographical nature. It must be said that after years of receiving "Yorkshire Moors" type books from him, this one really stood out: my uncle was right! What a hilarious read! And most unusual to hear of such a fascinating storyteller previously unkown to me. I shall be eating humble pie for a while I do fear, and what will I buy my uncle next april for his birthday that could match the quality and inspiration of this fantastic read? The sequel perhaps?

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for all 19 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Have just finished both of mike Pannett's books. I am now going to pass onto my parents to read. I think it is a perfect book to pick up and put down as and when you feel like. I love the part of Yorkshire Mike talks about and found myself with him during his adventures. Ab wonderful and can't wait for the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, marred by one thing 22 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I too read the extracts in the Daily Mail, and thought it would be a good book to get. I read it quite quickly, thoroughly enjoying it. A real feelgood read.

What was wrong, then? Well, Mike is a Yorkshireman and obviously doesn't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. So he left the book effectively unfinished, with a cliffhanger - not what you expect from a book such as this. Ironically, the vagaries of binding left eight blank pages at the end, which added insult to injury. No doubt Mike will bring out another book and be laughing all the way to the bank.
