Product Description

Review

This affectionate tribute to Milne follows the familiar rhythms and rhyme schemes of the master (The Oldie)

Life continues to take its toll on the author, but the overall feeling remains one of cheerful resignation (Knutsford Guardian)

[This book] will certainly strike a chord with all those who are 60 (and a bit) (Belgravia)

Book Description

Christopher Matthew follows up the astounding success of Now We Are Sixty with another collection of A.A. Milne inspired poems

Many years ago I found a book in a book shop that made me laugh out loud so much I had to buy it, if only to avoid the withering glances I was getting from other customers and the staff. That book was The Diary of Adrian Mole; I read it a good while before it became well known and turned into a TV series.
It has taken me all this time to find another book that had the same effect. Now We Are Sixty by Christopher Matthew is that book.
I stood in the bookshop unable to stop laughing. And I'm no where near sixty yet! I gave a copy to my father in law for Christmas and he loved it.
It does help if you are familiar with the original poems by Milne, that way you get the rhyme in your head and the poem flows better. but even if you are not you will appreciate the remix of of Milne's work. The weird joining together of a wistful longing for the past, plus cynical observations of modern life and sureal poetry really works well.
What else can I say? The book will be a classic of humourous poetry for years to come. Buy it, read it, love it.

I bought this for my father for his 60th, just as he bought me "Now we are six" for my sixth.
And he loved it. Everything - including the clever cover design - is a delight and a feast for Pooh reading parents.
In fact he has been talking about it almost every time we have met since. All his friends now seem to be buying copies as well - at least those who know the original (this is essential otherwise you won't get it, I gather), so there must be a run on this in the bookshops of Devon.
The perfect parody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful bringing up to date of the original 25 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I too laughed out loud. I appreciated the way the poems stayed true to the original metres and themes, but in a modern and adult setting. As in any collection one will have favourites, and others which fail to hold attention, but I am already finding pleasure in dipping back in. A very succesful Christmas present to me, and we will be buying more to give away ourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern and humouristic. 31 Mar 2000

Format:Hardcover
I read this book as a 28 year old and delighted in the modern outlook on life. It evokes very vivid comical life situations in an optimistic and child like innocent fashion. I bought it immediately for my sixty year old mother and she loved it. It gives anyone a "lift" to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who ever appreciated A A Milne...... 29 Nov 2000
Format:Hardcover
I am not yet sixty! I opened this book as an A A Milne lover. And closed it as a Christopher Matthews lover too. The modern translation hits home! One can't help but to identify!! Fun. Idiosyncratic.

In my second childhood at 60+ I laughed out loud (in a public place) when I first broused through this book. True to its predecessor in rhythm it evokes ones memories of Christopher Robin et al but in a modern setting. I loved it and have ordered some for presents this Xmas.

Great condition, great content, retro style, just as good as I had hoped. I had "NOW WE ARE SIX" as a child, and the parodies of those verses are very witty.
