Format:Audio CD
Too many live albums are carefully edited and sanitised, bearing little relation to the real experience of seeing a band. I was fortunate enough to attend the gig at the Water Rats in King's Cross, London, where much of this album was recorded and it is almost perversely true to life. Every mistake is recorded for posterity, including a hilarious false start ("You try to greet the crowd and you immediately get treated like s*** by the gods of electricity" as frontman Andrew Falkous puts it).
The spiky, energetic noise-punk music itself is fantastic, largely taken from FOTL's first album, 'Curses', with a preview of 'Drink Nike' from 'Travels With Myself and Another' and three tracks that they probably only play live or have ditched after trying out. The sound quality is pretty good too - after they get things sorted out ("25 per cent more guitar, 18 per cent more bass - take that as a watchword for the way you mix generally," quips Falkous). However, the most compelling reason to get hold of a copy of this album is to hear a prime example Falkous's viciously funny stand-up act between songs. He dispenses sweary bile in all directions - sections of the crowd, the British Olympic team, and another band who have clearly inspired absolute hatred in Falkous when they have played together in the past. It's a pretty fair representation of how FOTL sound live, but no substitute for seeing them in the flesh.

For anyone who was lucky enough to see FOTL with kelson on bass and backing vocals in the flesh this album is for you. It faithfully reproduces the exciting raw energy of the band live, even capturing some of the amusing falco/kelson banter which always made their gigs with kelson a joy to witness.
If you never saw the band (with this line up) live then check out some of the footage on you tube, realise how great they were and order this album. You won't regret it. While you're at the computer go visit their myspace page and listen to the new demos with the new line up. Obviously some differences from what we're all used to considering they've also recruited a 2nd guitarist but still better than anything else out there right now.
Also if anyone else (like me) somehow missed out on them while they were still playing, check out mclusky, falco and jacks previous band. You'll love them.
