This review is from: Novus Piccolo GPS Speed Camera Alert System (Electronics)
The weapons in the arsenal of drivers' in their battle against the dangers of modern motoring fall broadly into two camps : Camera/speedtrap detectors and camera/speedtrap locators. The former alert the user of potential dangers by detecting the use of laser signals of the appropriate wavelength in the vicinity, and are of arguable legality. The later use a gps locator in conjuction with a database of the relevant locations to warn you of impending doom. These are 100% legal. The Novus Piccolo falls squarely into this later category. The beauty of this device comes from it's affordability (you can easily pay four times as much for competitors) and it's size. It will sit on the dashboard quite happily and hardly be noticed (until of course you approach a camera). It issues alerts both audibly (a spoken prompt) and visually (flashing leds), and the real "deal clincher" for this is the lifetime of free updates for the database from the Novus website. The downside I guess is that it will only ever be as accurate as the database... so regular updates are a must, albeit my experience has been that the database does seem very accurate. It runs off of the cigarete lighter socket... so somewhere you will need to trail the lead to power it. Finally the system drivers for the update/downloads don't seem to work with Vista, XP's OK but Vista's questionable. This only becomes apparent once you have bought it, got it home and opened the box... so be advised (luckily I have both at home). Overall I have to say it works well for me. I know it's only an entry level product... But that's really all I want, as I don't think the extra price of the monthly subscriptions for other products justify the cost. Touch wood... so far, the ends have justified the means for me ;-)

I have installed this device in my vehicle, and have it energize when the ignition is switched on.It sits on the dash behind the heated front screen and works well. I like the idea of being reminded of camera's and warned if I exceed the speed limit in a speed camera zone. I do not have to take my eyes off the road to check the speedo in any so called accident black spots! A good buy!

I received this as a gift recently and although I haven't been able to test it's accuracy yet (I live in Germany most of the time) I just wanted to give potential buyers some info about updating it.I run Windows 7 operating system on my PC and although Novus don't advertise the Piccolo as compatible, I had no problems updating the unit using the Vista software on their website. If you're running Windows 7 don't be put off! I'll update this review once I've been back to the UK in a few weeks time.
