This is a great album - and Rick Altzi has a fine voice which isn't that far removed from Jorn.

I love MP and have all their albums. My favourite is Aeronautics. After several spins, I would like to say this "new start" album is JUST GREAT. The new singer is really good, almost like Jorn, and the songs are there, in their signature melodic metallic "masterplannic" unique style. I am terribly enthusiastic about this, and I urge all MP fans to buy it. All Helloween spin off fans will like it. It is one of the best album in the genre in recent years. REALLY MUST HAVE.

As a huge fun of Masterplan and Jorn individually I can strongly recommend to give up any push backs Jorns departure caused to you in order to purchase this album.
As a bonus part that would be the self titled track which nevertheless shows that Masterplan CAN push it to another direction and avoid repeating theirselves over and over again.
If you want something to enjoy with,go and grab it now!!

Masterplan - Novum Initium Review 25 Jun. 2013
By Michael - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
With current At Vance vocalist Rick Altzi at the helm handling vocals, and former Helloween guitarist Roland Grapow. Masterplan a Power metal band hailing from Hamburg, Germany have crafted a masterpiece known as Novum Initium, which means "New Beginning" in English when put into a translator. Each track on this album begins and ends with flswless endevor as each mucisian plays their instruments with profession that one would not expect from a band that has only been aroud for thirteen years.

Novum Initium opens with the instrumental track Per Aspera Ad Astra, which only lasts 1:01 before slowly fading into the album's single The Game, which showcases Rick Altzi performing at his career best, at least in my opinion. I might have to listen to more At Vance to decide that though. Next we come to the ballad on the album Keep Your Dream Alive, and as most of you know by now I hate ballads, but this one I actually like. Black Night Of Magic is the best track on the album with Altzi's soaring vocals and Grapow's guitar work.

At this point in the album you can tell that Masterplan have gone through a lineup change with Altzi replacing Jorn Lande on vocals even though he will be missed, his solo work could use some work though. Betrayal and No Escape are actually filler on this album talking about relationships, and what happens when they go wrong. Pray On My Soul is track number 7 clocking in at just 4:35 the band manages to put alot of craftsmanship into this one track talking about religion, talking about how one doesn't need god if he has friends and family rooting from them. Earth Is Going Down is another masterpiece on this album talking about the apocalypse, and judging man's existance. Return From Avalon the bands more symphonic side as they bust out the keyboards, and pay tribute to the Power metal gods. Through Your Eyes is the second ballad on Novum Initium and unlike Keep Your Dream Alive I don't particularly like this one as much. The last track on the album is the self titled Novum Initium and clocking in at slightly over 10 minutes this the longest song on the album. The deluxe edition also comes with two bonus tracks 1492, and Fear The Silence, which you'll just have to listen for yourself to form an opinion on them as I did.

In conclusion, Novum Initium is without a doubt a game changer here in 2013, with other albums being released this year in the Power metal category such as Dark Moor's Ars Musica, which was up until now my pick for album of the year, Stratovarius' Nemesis, Circle Of Silecnce's The Rise Of Rebellion, and the list goes on. For some reason though this release seems to transend all those other albums mostly because of the addition of Rick Altzi on vocals and Roland Grapow on guitar. Masterplan's Novum Initium has easily become one of my favorite albums here in 2013, and is my pick for album of the year even though we have only just entered the second half of the year. Sorry Dark Moor, but Masterplan has the better album this time around.

Highlights: Per Aspera Ad Astra, The Game, Keep Your Dream Alive, Black Night Of Magic, No Escape, Pray On My Soul, Earth Is Going Down, Return From Avalon, Novum Initium, 1492 (Bonus track), Fear The Silence (Bonus track)

I've been a fan of Masterplan for a while but I struggled to enjoy their last two albums. This album takes them back to where they belong. I've had this album for about two weeks and I keep getting drawn to it. Definitely pick this up as its a great album!!

Too Loud 13 July 2013
By Rÿan Matthew - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Big surprise - another album ruined by today's incompetent engineers. This isn't as compressed and distorted as Death Magnetic or Queensrÿche's latest album, but it's close. I'm not one to use a program to analyze how loud each track is and how many clipped waves there are and this and that. I have these things called 'ears' that allow me to determine whether or not something sounds good and this album does not. It has some sizzle and definitely suffers from a total lack of dynamic range. Instead of a nice, full, warm sound, it's cold, harsh and compressed. The dumb kids of today who download everything and then 'listen' to it on their phones won't know the difference, but for the few of us left who still enjoy high fidelity audio - avoid this.

On top of all that, the songs suck. What was once a great power metal band has been replaced by some... thing that sounds like an attempt at radio airplay. Gone is the Voice of God, Jorn Lande and instead we get some guy who sounds like one of those inexperienced guys from mainstream rock bands. I could get over that if the songs were good otherwise, but they aren't. I didn't think that something as amazing as power metal could ever be generic and boring, but Roland found a way. I'm finished with this band until there's a chance that Jorn and Uli may return.

Music Holds Up With Previous Albums 8 Aug. 2013
By S. Bruno - Published on Amazon.com

Rick Altzi obviously is not the singer that Jorn Lande is, but the music on this album stands up very well with anything Masterplan has done. I admit, at first I had trouble getting into it, but the more I listened the more I like it. There really are no filler tunes on this album, and there are many standouts: The Game, Black Night of Magic, Pray On My Soul, Return from Avalon; and the title track, Novum Initium, is absolutely epic (clocking in at 10 minutes) - one of the coolest songs Masterplan has ever done. The tunes are well-written and the hooks are good. And Roland Grapow really shines on this album. I encourage anyone to keep on listening to it, if your initially discouraged by what you hear.
