works to admire 10 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The 6th volume of the Library of America Philip Roth. Like the other volumes it has a full page picture of Philip Roth on the front cover (not the passport sized image allocated to other authors) and the paper is (I believe) somewhat thicker. This still makes a very economical way to keep on your shelves Operation Shylock and Sabbath's Theatre.

The jacket says these novels introduce a decade of fresh vitatily and achievement unusual from a 60 year old author. That may well be true. These works are certainly full of invention and vitality. But they lack the sheer exuberance of earlier works. I'm inclined to feel that volumes 2-4 of this series give us the best of Roth (to date), with a great variety of works and in the Zuckerman series a sustained consideration of the artistic life.

That said, I look forward to volume 7.

Two amazing novels 8 Feb 2011
By Dallas Fawson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Along with The Counterlife, the two novels collected in this volume (Operation Shylock and Sabbath's theater) make up my three favorite Roth novels. They are both long and complex, but surprisingly readable. Operation Shylock is possibly Roth's funniest, most clever novel, and Sabbath's Theater is possibly his most brutal, but no less rewarding. It also contains one of Roth's most interesting (and vile) characters.

Roth has an amazing ability to have his novels consistently readable; in other words, there are never any rough patches in the reading, there are never parts that lag compared to the others. I don't know how he does it, and it's difficult to think of another writer that does it as well. This talent is evident in these two novels, and is all the more impressive due to their complexity.

If you have not read Roth before, do not start here; you can't go wrong starting with Goodbye, Columbus. After that, read Portnoy's Complaint or The Ghost Writer. Then take a crack at one of these. If you develop a liking for his style, do not miss these two novels, because they're two of the best contemporary novels out there.

Explaining plot and reviewing these novels extensively seems unnecessary, because the reward comes with reading and discovering the magic of Roth for yourself.
