Thoroughly well written; it follows a clear and concise path, with tremendous technical depth, whilst remaining quite easy to read. If only more IT books were of this standard!

A brilliant study aid 18 April 2006
By raines
Format:Paperback
I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's clearly written and explains the material in a manner I found much easier to understand than the course books. The parts of the Novell course that were fuzzy to me became crystal clear after reading this, particularly file system and eDirectory rights. After using this to revise for the 2 weeks beforehand, I passed the CNA (050-686) exam at the first attempt last week. Money well spent.

You want to pass read the book 21 Sep 2005
By Jay D. Remsen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Before taking this exam I had gone thru the 2000 some odd pages of the Novell 6.0 study guide for the CNA. Be careful in just using Novell's books. Supplement this information with Mr. Wyrostek's book, quite a few things are different on the 6.5 then the 6.0. You are going to need this book for the exam.

As to structure please pay careful attention to all notes and alerts the author provides, think of them as explanation points!!! and then think of them as explanation points!! and then think of them as explanation points again!!! When the author suggests that you carry out the functions of the application services (iManager, Virtual Office, iFolder etc. ) actually do it, these were no joke. Do everything you can to setup and configure these services, memorize all of your file rights, file and directory attributes, object rights, and property rights. I wish you all the best of luck on the exam and I thank the author for publishing this book. PASS

P.S. Questions are paragraphs and there is no way you are going to do it in 20 or 30 mins no matter how many practice questions you can answer in under 5 seconds so go to the bathroom ahead of time :)

Exam Cram Helps (But you also need experience); CD Bites 3 Mar 2006
By David Lange - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Passed with 700 on first try.

I thought I was pretty advanced already - I have installed and upgraded many 6.5 servers, clients, managed a huge e-dir tree, file system, NSS volumes, rights, NDPS. I thought I was totally ready for the test.

Just to make sure I wasn't wasting my $125 on the test, I figured $20 for this book was good insurance. And it SO was!

The test includes a lot of little esoteric facts about NetWare that even someone with lots of experience might never see. This book does a good job of bringing all of those little esoteric facts to light.

The sample questions at the end of each chapter and sample tests at the end of the book are also very good simulations of the type of questions you'll see. However, I wouldn't say that any of the questions are word-for-word from the real test.

Also, there were some questions on the test that I didn't feel received adequate coverage in this book. Experience got me through those questions.

The sample test questions on the included CD are clearly written by someone else. Some of them made no sense grammatically. It only includes multiple choice and fill-in questions. (The test has several other types of questions).

The fill-in style questions on the CD also have a little quirk: unlike the real test, it is case sensitive. If the answer is "2" on a fill-in question, the real test will accept 2, two, Two, TWO, to, and too (so even bad spellers can get it right). But on the sample test CD, the answer might be programmed as "TWO" and "two", "2" and anything else is wrong.

I didn't actually learn anything useful from this book, except how to use what I already know about NW 6.5 to pass Novell's exam. I would emphasize that you should already know a lot about Netware and have some recent and fairly advanced experience before reading this book and certainly before attempting the test.

On second thought, I did find one very useful bit of information: Appendix A has a very informative table of IP ports used by all Novell products. It is the first time I have seen this information collected in one place.

Excellent book. 2 Oct 2005
By M. Wallace - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book 2 weeks before sitting my CNA 6.5. It's an excellent resource that covers all the exam objectives clearly and concisely. Each chapter ends with questions that you'd typically find on the exam. The end of the book also contains two complete practice exams that will prepare you for the real thing. After two weeks of study with this book and some hands on practice with Netware 6.5, I scored (736/800) on the test.

The exam simulator that comes with the book is very poor though. However, after being in touch with the author, this was beyond his control and not his fault. The questions in the book more than make up for this shortcoming.

The author has also setup an excellent website (...) that supplements the book.

If you are thinking of sitting the Novell CNA exam, this book is essential.
