A very good resource for writers 5 Nov. 2013

Really good for anyone who wants to make a living from writing - has quite a lot of useful articles on the craft as well as advice about approaching publications and agents. I would definitely recommend it.

2014 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market 5 Jan. 2014
By S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Has very useful tips, and is often called the indispensable guide. It does group many active publishers in one place so you don't have to hunt for them, but a lot of the material seems to be copy-pasted from previous editions, and for some of them it's out of date when you check the website. (Be sure to check the ones that say to sent a manuscript...a lot of publishers have switched to electronic submission forms in the past few years)

So...yes, it's an extremely useful listing, but it seems overpriced for the amount of effort put into it from year to year. You're probably almost as likely to have the same information with an older edition.

Need to know what novel and short story publishers want? You need this book! 6 Oct. 2013
By Dabrow Ellison - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Writers can't go wrong with this must-have resource. Searching the internet for publishers, what they need, and how to submit your stories can be frustrating. With this book you have all that at the flip of some pages. This book also starts with some helpful hints. If you write novels or short stories, you need this book.

Best of luck to all of you new and emerging writers! 8 July 2014
By Dual-Sided Douglas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
First of all, this book is extremely detailed with easy to follow layouts, which is something that the Writer's Market Series has done very well. As a new writer who has no connections, angles, or even insight into emerging trends concerning the publishing field, this book is a great resource to have.

The format makes it very easy to follow and reference without going into a lot of excessive details that have little to nothing to do with submission criteria or pertinent background of a company.

It should be noted that this book is NOT all encompassing as others have come to believe. By that, I mean that it does not have EVERY literary agency in the U.S. or abroad or even EVERY publishing company.

Likewise, while detailed, I would highly suggest checking each company's website, regardless of what you read in the book, as I have found that a significant portion of information within is not accurate.

That is to be expected to a degree obviously, as many people come and go throughout a company's tenure. But, in other areas it tends to be downright wrong. For instance, one company within the book, is recorded as wanting, "Query with SASE only." The same entry also lists a particular agent being solely interested in acquiring fiction works in the fields of romance, thriller and young adult. However, a quick trip to the website shows that the company itself, actually accepts e-queries only AND that same agent is interested in horror and action themed novels and is, in fact, not interested in any romance novels.

Now obviously people's tastes change and as employees come and go, some agents will be forced to take on new genres but these can be deal breakers right away for someone just relying on the book's information to submit their work. And with publishing, like so many other areas of life, first impressions are VERY important. Being unable to follow even the simplest directions can result in agents not even reading beyond the first sentence of a query letter.

So, in closing, this book is a very worthwhile resource at a relatively low cost, with a lot of things for the new or emerging writer that it does better than similar books. But always double check the content in the book, as a company's website is always going to be more accurate and up to date.

2014 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market 15 Jun. 2014
By Joyce Anne Laird - Published on Amazon.com

I buy it every year. It is always a little out of date compared to the information I can find online, but there's something nice about being able to thumb through a book and underline things. What can I say? I'm old school -- even though I back up my info by online searches.
