Book Description

Got a burning desire to write a novel but don’t know where to start? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Written by bestselling novelist and creative writing tutor, Lynne Barrett-Lee, Novel: Plan it. Write it. Sell it, will teach you the skills you need to do that, step by step.

There has never been an easier time to get your work in front of readers – just look at the millions of self-published books uploaded to Amazon. But if you want success of a commercial kind – i.e. to write a novel that will sell – then you need to take the time to learn your craft. To ask yourself questions: what are the key components every novel needs? How can you make yours unputdownable? How should you approach planning? Where’s the best place to begin? How do you create memorable characters, and build effective plots and subplots? How can you use dialogue to best effect? How should you plan your chapters? How can you make it sing? Where should you end?

But going the distance as a novelist is not just about ticking boxes. Neither is it just about talent. It’s about nailing your theme, maintaining passion, about caring for your characters. It’s also about doggedness and resilience - continuing to write even when everything feels hopeless. How exactly do you find the wherewithal to go the distance with your novel? And assuming you have, how the heck do you find an agent?

Taking you right through the novel creation process and beyond, Novel aims to guide you towards the answers that will work best for you, pointing out the pitfalls that beset so many would-be novelists, and helping you to chart a course through the entire creative process. That book burning inside you - would you prefer to see it sitting in a bookshop? Then welcome – your journey starts here.

"A fantastic, supportive course: just what I needed when I was setting out to become a professional writer. Constructive advice and feedback on what I was writing, combined with practical help on negotiating the world of markets, agents and publishers. Lynne shares her successful experience generously."
Peter Higgins
Peter Higgins' first novel, Wolfhound Century, is published by Gollancz in the UK and Orbit in the US, and in translation in France, Germany, Poland and Finland. The sequel, Truth and Fear, comes out in early 2014.

"Before Lynne’s course, I was a revved up sports car after a three gin lunch, full of ideas, ambition and passion, but prone to crashing into a central reservation of procrastination and improbability. The content of the course was the steadying hand that transformed my desire into direction and eventual publication. I owe Lynne a lifetime of three gin lunches as thanks."
Dan Tyte, author of ‘Half Plus Seven’, published by Parthian Books, spring 2014.

"Lynne's classes are fun and friendly and her expertise covers many different aspects of writing. If you can't be there in person then the chance to read her notes has to be the next best thing."
Evonne Wareham, award-winning author of romantic suspense.

More About the Author

Lynne Barrett-Lee was born in London in 1959 and is married with three children. She has always written in her spare time, and planned early on to be the next Martin Amis or Ian McEwan. Sadly, neither of these eventualities looked like happening any time, ever, but, undeterred, she did begin to achieve publishing success in the mid 90s, as a writer of both articles and short stories for women's magazines, almost all of which have published her work over the years.

Her first romantic comedy, JULIA GETS A LIFE, was published by Bantam in 2000 and she has since written five further novels in her own name, as well as one, WILD ABOUT HARRY, under her pseudonym, Daisy Jordan. Her 2006 novel, BAREFOOT IN THE DARK, was shortlisted for the Melissa Nathan award for comedy romance, and might well have won (she likes to think), had Marian Keyes not been shortlisted too.

More recently, after an unexpected offer, she turned her hand to ghostwriting, co-writing the acclaimed NEVER SAY DIE with the incredible Melanie Davies, which was published in 2009, to great reviews. She has since ghosted several best-selling non-fiction titles, including GIANT GEORGE, Life with the World's Biggest Dog, and the recent Sunday Times Bestseller, THE BABY LAUNDRY. She also ghosts a major non-fiction series of memoirs for one of the UK's leading publishers.

As well as penning books, lynne writes a weekly column for Wales' Western Mail Weekend Magazine, is a regular guest on BBC Radio Wales, and has also written two titles for the Quick Reads series of books for adult learner readers - one ghosted for TV presenter Fiona Phillips. She also teaches creative writing at Cardiff University.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good practical book to help you get writing 13 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this because I needed a practical book that would help get me motivated to start writing. I knew I had it in me, I just didn't know where - or how - to begin. I found it really helpful in moving me towards my dream of completing my own novel. I read it alongside Celebrity Authors' Secrets Celebrity Authors' Secrets: The World's Greatest Living Authors Reveal How They Sell Millions of Booksbecause I also wanted to see how really successful writers had made it. It was good balance to learn the practical tips of building a book, and also to be inspired by successful authors' secrets of success.

3.0 out of 5 stars Novel planning 16 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A lot of emphasis on drafting a 10,000 word plan of the novel, before actually writing it, which might put off some would be writers. Otherwise, some good advice for the novelist who sees themselves as writing hardback or paperback novels, rather than an ebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice little read 4 Mar. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very nice little read. A little out of date, still talks about having a shyster, sorry, an agent, to publish a book. I would have thought that most modern writers would be looking towards self publishing using Kindle or the like. Worth having though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'How to.' Book that Cuts the Mustard! 27 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Of the many books out there advising authors how to write and sell their novel, this is the one to read. All the information is there, in 12 succinct and readable chapters which include just about everything - from "Getting started" to tricks of the trade to bear in mind once you are approaching the winning post - i.e publication. As a writer who was fortunate to attend in person Lynne Barrett-Lee's course on novel writing, I can vouch first hand for her expertise. Read her book before you start work on your novel, or when you are halfway through and suffering from writer's block of lack of faith in your writing, or even after you have penned those longed-for words 'The End' - but reading this book is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for novelists 28 Dec. 2013
By Lulu
Format:Kindle Edition
Inspired to finally get that book you have been talking about written in the New Year? This is the book you need to both inspire and guide you - as it has done for me, helping get me over the finishing line with a novel I have been trying to write for years. Clear and well laid out, this book is packed with tips and advice from a published author who knows how to make their advice accessible to the novice. I found the section on the synopsis especially useful.

This is a guide you will reference again and again as you write - a bit like a friend to turn to for advice. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Novel: Plan it.Write it. Sell it. 4 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A brilliant resource for any aspiring novelist! It contains all the information you need, written in a style which is both practical and professional. Lynne breaks the process down into twelve 'steps' covering all aspects of planning, writing and selling. When you are reading the book, you know that she is someone who has successfully gone through all these steps herself. The course on which the book is based was the inspiration for me to start writing my own novel and I shall be referring to the book over and over again. Lynne has given me the confidence to move on as writer.

This is the book that will make you write your novel. It's full of inspiration together with practical details, tips and pitfalls and is in a very helpful format. It covers every aspect of planning writing and selling your novel with the added reassurance of having been written by a well established author. Having attended Lynne's course I shall be referring to this all the time. It feels like a permanent home tutorial and I'm not sure how I managed without it!
