Beware! 26 Feb 2010
I have had this for a number of months now and I feel potential buyers should be aware of a couple of points.
There are a lot of images here and trying to find them is an absolute nightmare!
There is no printed catalogue as it is all done via portfolio browser. I had a previous version a number of years ago and that came with a large printed catalogue which made it usable.
It's so difficult to find photographs as they have no catalogue, only subject headings, within the browser. There isn't even a place to find the subject headings without scrolling through the list of 127000+ images.
One of the catalogues even says that it was created on a different version of portfolio and so some of the functionality will be missing.
Trying to load a good percentage of the images from the disc into photoshop will make the program hang. This is probably due to corrupted files as they still don't work when copied to the desktop. In fact, it affects photoshop so much that force quitting won't work - you have to restart the machine to be able to use the program again!!!!

Overall, potentially lots of images (if they work), a nightmare to find photos and very, very poorly implemented.

You have been warned!

UPDATE:
I have just upgraded to OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the software which allows you to browse the catalogue does not work and there is no fix! Avoid until there is a fix.

What a poor show 18 Mar 2010
I had been looking for clip art for the MAC, and having read about Art Explosion I bought it, even though I thought it was a bit pricey. In fact, because it was pricey, I thought it would work.

How wrong I was. No instructions come with the pack of DVDs. I installed the browser that is on one of the DVDs. The browser apparently helps you open and scan the DVDs.

It was taking between two and three minutes to open one item of clip art. I contacted Avanquest Technical Support who told me to go to the Extensis site to download the latest version of the Portfolio browser. I tried to do so, but couldn't find any downloads on the site. I contacted Avanquest again, but was told that 'I believe the Portfolio Browser is part of the Portfolio Browser' What does that mean, I wonder. They suggested contacting Extensis directly to see if there was a download.

So, I have paid a lot of money for a program that does not work, and for which the help is most unhelpful.

I would give it no stars if I could for the simple reason, it does not work, and I don't see why I should be expected to fight to get the latest version of a browser when the one on the DVD should do the job.

However, I am not giving up. I will try and get in touch with the American company that produces the program.

But don't buy it, please, unless you are prepared to put an awful lot of effort into making it work.

A Super Nova of a Product! 29 Jun 2000
By L. Patterson - Published on Amazon.com
After struggling with an on-line clip art service and it's down-times vaguaries, I purchased the Art Explosion 750,000. I have never used clip art from CDs, but this was super easy to get the hang of. Stick in the CD, click on it, pick a category, then browse, drag clip to Photoshop icon or download to disc and voila! I have an iMac and a G4 and the clips really fly by. The selection is fabulous-from retro to abstract and and they always print out true-to-color, high resolution and non-jaggy. A bonus is the inclusion 2 gigantic books of the images, alphabets, photos and fonts so that you can get the general idea of what your're after. Also included: a collection of fonts from Agfa and Bitstream as well as an extensive photo collection, raster art collection and alphabets and backgrounds. It is so much bigger (48CDs), faster and more convenient than I ever envisioned, I'm sorry that I didn't get it sooner. Really a help in my hectic typesetting business!

Watch out Mac G5 owners .... 16 Oct 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I just got a Mac G5 with 2 GB of RAM and was looking forward to using this product. I would have to agree that from the book most of the clipart contained in this set is cartoonish, but my worst complaint is that I just couldn't install it. On install all you'll get is a window stating you don't have enough RAM and fail to continue.

Nova Development software support wasn't any help either. They were VERY familiar with the problem and the tech made it clear that a fix would NOT be coming out anytime in the near future. He immediately gave me the phone # to call and get a refund ... and I'll use it.

Useful, but still lacking 5 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book mainly hoping I could find good illustrations of a diverse selection of people. I find that most of those illustrations are too cartoonish for editorial use, and don't show much variety. The high resolution photos were of no use either as they are actually only "medium" resolution. They would be great for web usage but not for print. Also, I wasn't able to use the electronic image catalog and was unable to search the photographs effectively since the file names are not descriptive.
If you're looking for illustrations of things rather than people, then this is a good source. The vector images are well organized and the print catalog is easy to use. Overall, I'd say this is a good product, but I don't think it offers much more than the 525,000 or 600,000 image versions.
