Biography

PATRICIA PETIBON – BIOGRAPHY
“. . . she seems here to have developed an altogether more rounded tone, especially in the lower register, and has developed the rare ability to inject into her performance vocal characterizations which, to a large extent, nullify the need to see these operatic characters in the flesh . . . a glorious display of vocal versatility . . ... Format: Audio CD
This is a very original and interesting collection of baroque and (and earlier) pieces performed with skill and gusto by excellent musicians. It is good, but I do have my reservations.

I like Patricia Petibon's voice very much. She has a richness and a maturity of tone which is in contrast to the rather girly and coquettish picture on the CD cover. This is terrific in some of the traditional pieces, and her singing of Greensleeves is simply lovely. Petibon also thinks hard about what she is singing and engages strongly with the text. However, I think she overdoes this sometimes so that Dido's Lament, for example, is taken extremely slowly and with agonised phrasing which, perhaps perversely, robs it of some of its power. Others, like Sarah Connolly, bring a simpler solemnity to the piece which for me lends it a deeply moving dignity which this lacks. I found this in other places, too.

Andrea Marcon directs his excellent ensemble with great sensitivity and real verve in places. There is a wonderful variety of instruments used and the style is varied, too. This works very well in some places, but I felt that the real swing given to some of the Codex Martinez Companon pieces was a trifle overdone, with the flute sounding more like a Jethro Tull album than a traditional Spanish piece.

You can't fault this for effort and imagination, it's just that for me they don't quite get it right in places. Nevertheless this is an enjoyable and original programme and well worth a try.

I never really listened to anything like this before. So charming, so challenging, so tempting. This young woman seems to be able to do just anything with hear voice. This must be the CD of this decade.

Exquisite... just wonderful 14 Nov 2012

I have now listened through this CD several times and some of Mlle. Petibon's interpretations are absolutely exquisite. She has just an amazing voice, thrilling range and a freedom and passion about her work that is inspiring to listen to. In the very first piece, there is a phrase where she glides up three notes while adding a dramatic crescendo only to drop off the top with one of her characteristic sighs - it just brings you to your knees. What I think I appreciate most about her work is the incredible freedom she brings to many of these pieces - she just lets all the emotion out, even if it is over the top - I mean, way over the top. But in the end it is ever so "French" and ever so unmistakeably hers! That freedom is just breathtaking and courageous. Brava, Mlle. Petibon, brava!

I found the voice pleasing, but it was the orchestral work which was really exciting. The Rameau duet was fantastic!
