CD Description

Xavier de Maistre is generally fêted as the artist who has managed to liberate the harp from its reputation for wonderful but very soft sounds, and establish it as a solo instrument in the concert hall. On his new album Notte Veneziana, the internationally successful harp virtuoso plays well-known concertos by the Venetian composers Vivaldi, Marcello and Albinoni in new arrangements, combining them with original compositions for solo harp such as the sonata by Giovanni Pescetti, Godefroid’s stunning set of variations on the popular tune “Carnaval de Venise”, and “La Mandoline” by 19th-century composer Elias Parish Alvars. Xavier de Maistre's aim is to make the listener forget completely that most of the Baroque concertos heard here were not originally written for the harp, but for different melody instruments. He finds it fascinating to bring out new timbres in the arrangements, some of which he pens himself. Vivaldi's famous concerto "Winter", in particular, seems to him to be predestined for playing on the harp, and his interpretation does indeed present this often-heard work in a totally new guise.

Tracks 1-3 - Antonio Vivaldi 1678–1741: Concerto in D major RV 93
Tracks 4-6 - Alessandro Marcello 1684–1750: Concerto in D minor
Tracks 7-10 - Elias Parish Alvars 1808–1849: La Mandoline, Grande Fantaisie op. 84
Track 11 - Tomaso Albinoni 1671–1751 / Remo Giazotto 1910–1998: Adagio in G minor
Tracks 12-14 - Giovanni Pescetti 1704–1766: Sonata in C minor
Tracks 15-17 - Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in G major RV 299
Tracks 18-20 - Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in F minor RV 297, “L’inverno” “Winter” (from the Four Seasons)
Track 21 - Félix Godefroid 1818–1897: Carnaval de Venise op. 184

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music 6 April 2012

I don't usually like music which has been transposed for a different instrument than the original, but not only does this work well in this CD, the resulting sound is beautiful. It is like listening to these well known works for the first time in a refreshing kind of way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album! 20 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD
Fancifully imagined in a booklet-note novella, this disc's evocative night in Venice centres on a harpist demonstrationg why he likes to play Baroque concertos by Vivaldi and Marcello in trascriptions for his own instrument. Xavier de Maistre's performances, backed by a wonderful sting ensemble, are justification enough in ther luminous colour and limpid dexterity: He also includes original virtuoso harp pieces in a magically effective programme. A must for harp lovers and all the others who would like to discover this amazing instrument!

4.0 out of 5 stars aural delight 14 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first heard this on the BBC World Service during the middle of a spell of insomnia.
I had to search the BBC webpages to find the title etc because I found it so entrancing.
Well worth the effort, the music is beautiful and the Harp playing is superb. If you like the Baroque give it a try.
