5.0 out of 5 stars Everything to Enjoy, 11 Feb 2009
This review is from: Nothing to be Afraid of (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
In 2010 it will be 30 years since this delightful collection of 10 short stories was published. I have found it to be most successful with children aged between 6 and 11 which is not easy to accomplish with the same book. The stories provide a stimulus for creative writing, are a boon for filling in an odd ten minutes and can simply be enjoyed on their own merits. Jan Mark has created fascinating scenarios from everyday incidents and locations. The stories have humour, pathos and occasionally hint at something a little dark, disturbing and slightly unsettling.
Easily the most popular tales that have never failed to be successful in my experience are 'William's Version' which is one of the funniest stories I have ever read, the title story 'Nothing to be Afraid of' which shows how interesting and different a walk to the park can become with a bit of imagination and 'How Anthony Made a Friend' which is difficult to categorise but is a very clever title which reflects the author's extreme care over every word that she writes. A real winner of a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first scary book I ever read!, 2 April 2009
This review is from: Nothing to be Afraid of (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
This book, which I think I first read when I was about 6 or 7, is pure genius. 'Nule' haunts me to this day, and I can blame / thank Jan Mark for my obsession with ghosts and general oddness of any kind. I bought this again not too long ago, and - even as an adult - it is a great read! Love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Patchy, 8 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nothing to be Afraid of (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
'Nule' is the best one of this lot, and there are a few others that are pretty good... it's funny; they are patchy in quality but even the ones that you think at the time you don't much like stick in your head, and you find yourself thinking about them at odd times. Possibly because in some of them the idea for the story is better than the execution? Or maybe it's just me.
