Amazon.co.uk Review

Nothing Green is the sequel to Evelyn, the heart-on-its-sleeve story of a poor child's life in Ireland, which became a bestseller and a film starring Pierce Brosnan. Nothing Green picks up the story of Evelyn Doyle's life as her family moves to England and it traces her teen and adult years through a series of troubled relationships, poverty and the roller-coaster ride of growing up.

The first book was enchanting because it told the story of a poor Irish girl in a simple style and child-like prose. The style and content were one. It was charming and moving. The problem with the sequel is that the story is now about Evelyn's teenage and adult years. The child-like prose doesn't carry the story. The simple style seems trite and becomes wearisome. It gives the impression that the storyteller is unable to cope with the darker passions, complex themes and shadowy relationships that come with maturity. Doyle's story is still interesting, and her memoir sheds light on the whole period of the 1960s and onward, but the sequel is not as winning as the original simply because it's harder to care as much for this troubled teen and adult as it was for the little Irish girl of the original book. --Dwight Longenecker --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

CONFIRMED REVIEWS: IRELAND ON SUNDAY 27 July SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY 17 August 'After the pain and trauma depicted in Evelyn - the story of her father's epic court battle to rescue his children from the notorious state industrial schools which was subsequently madei nto a film by Pierce Brosnan - life could only ever be happy-ever-after for Evelyn Doyle, right? Nothing Green is a stark reply in the negative ... I didn`t know Evelyn had written a sequel. I really did enjoy this second book, every bit as much as the first, but i was highly disappointed in evelyn`s father by the end of it. He certainly was the hero in the first book, managing to change irish law and get his kids out of `the schools`, but we saw a different man in this book didn`t we ? Once he got his kids home he became a bully and a tyrant - a thoroughly unlikeable person - and i couldn`t help thinking his kids would have been better off left in `the schools.` Although i must admit i was rather wary of the way he rushed `the second mammy` off to ireland in the first book - THERE was a clue i suppose to the man he really was...? He was obviously all for himself and never stopped to think about anybody else`s feelings. Sorry evelyn, but i bet if you thought about it for long enough, there would be a selfish reason why he fought so hard to get you kids home - (maybe fame..? ) Anyway, great books both of them, well done.

I saw the movie last Christmas and I loved it. I have it on DVD. I read her 1st memoir, it was different from the movie. How I find out this book, I was doing a search on her, on here, and to my disbelief she written another, and was going to be publish in 8 months time when I looked at. So I was that this book wasn't going to released in the US, I emailed her, the publishing company in the US and I didn't back from them yet. It would be ashame if this book isn't going to be release in the US. I felt connected to her again like in the movie and her 1st book. Trust you surely love it. If it doesn't come out in the US, just spend the extra here for it. Thank you

To Leeds Lass The Banker ... you are indeed a very wise woman!

This book does shed light on the actual truth and Desmond Doyle's real reason for'rescuing his children'.

Their poor battered starved mother does not get a look in in any of the books but the truth is that she fled this bully wife beater in fear of her own life!
