N.E.R.D are without doubt my favourite band, one that seem to always produce great tracks, ones that you can listen to over and over.

'Nothing' delivers the quality no doubt, with some great songs...which would fit on their past 3 CD's with ease.

However unfortunately the quantity isn't really there, the CD only lasts for 36 minutes, a significant drop from previous albums where each of those lasted between 56 mins to 1 hour in time length, 'Nothing' is essentially halfed.

So I believe that the CD quality; the songs, are great and are definently N.E.R.D, albeit a slightly different style, but it's perhaps too short.

With that said you may want to wait a tad until the price drops, but know that your getting some great tracks.
This will probably go down as their 4th best album out of the 4, but with my very high evaluation of the first three.....it was gonna take some beating.

8/10 (would have been better if it was longer)

They got soul 15 Mar 2011
By B. Shaw
Format:Audio CD
Nothing represents a step forward for N*E*R*D, replacing the usual guitars and rock with vintage funk and soul. It's a slightly more impressive album than 2008's Seeing Sounds, which coincides with Chad Hugo's return to songwriting duties alongside fellow Neptune, Pharrell Williams. Despite the entire album being made on digital audio workstations, a number of tracks seem to be heavily influenced by the eras of psychedelic rock and MOR; with its use of glockenspiel, layered harmonies and lyrics about rain, "Inside of Clouds" sounds like a cut from The Beach Boys circa Smiley Smile. "Help Me" is similar to the Doors' "Queen of the Highway", but adopts a waltz-time groove. Best of all is the two-step conga of "Perfect Defect", whose chorus contains chords that come right out of Hall and Oates' "I Can't Go For That".

In an interview, Williams had cited the conflict that surrounded the album - the band's concern for Nothing's authentic vibe clashed with Interscope's demand for more club-orientated hits. As a result, the album's release was repeatedly delayed, and it comes in two forms; the deluxe edition includes another four tracks, including the terrific synth parps and bass in "The Man". Moreover, the album's "authentic vibe" is slightly scewed; the electro-soul of the Daft Punk-produced "Hypnotize U" precedes the highly political "Help Me". It doesn't always work; the Brian Wilson-esque "Life As a Fish" is followed by "Nothing on You", which sounds too much like a lost Neptunes B-side. Although the production and mix is more consistent than Seeing Sounds, one wonders why the highly-skilled Williams and Hugo didn't use real instruments (bar the odd trumpet and saxophone) in attempting to re-create the fuzzy guitars, propulsive drums and flourish of a Fender rhodes of the late 60s psych-groove. Tame Impala's Innerspeaker - one of the best albums of 2010 - finds great success in this. Overall though, Nothing is a melodic and catchy record, and one which will no doubt be overlooked by the masses and keep N*E*R*D in the domain of underground music.

so like all artists, albums tend to go through various phases. 'in search of' had that hip-hop/rnb feel, they followed up with the brilliant 'fly or die' which had a bit more of a 'pop/rock/rnb' feel and then came 'seeing sounds' - i must admit when i first heard it i disliked it but the more you listened to it the more you appreciated it (many people probably never got to that stage though). think youd probably describe it as a bit more "experimental"

so it should come as a relief to hear that 'nothing' is nothing like 'seeing sounds' and is most similar to 'fly or die'. 'hot n fun' being the headline song with that characteristic simple catchy beat but that aside there are some other great songs - 'perfect defect' being a particular highlight for me alongside 'life as a fish' and come to think of it 'nothing on you' is a great song. whereas the previous album 'seeing sounds' whilst brave and innovative was at times an effort to listen to, 'nothing' is easy listening with that upbeat, happy quality that we've come to expect. probably the only criticism like another reviewer says is that there isnt more of it to listen to, whens the next album coming out again?...
