Book Description

1 Dec 2000
This volume details the scandal that rocked the foundations of South African cricket. It offers a presentation of the facts as exposed to public scrutiny, combined with interviews and analysis. How did we miss the warning signs? Are the administrators of the game blameless? Will they go far enough to uncover the truth? Most importantly, has Hansie Cronje told the whole truth? These are some of the issues raised in this book, along with a discussion on international instances of spread betting and match-fixing. Controversial analysis is presented of Cronje's performance on the pitch before and after known contact with book makers. The book confronts the question of what compelled Hansie Cronje to do what he did, and offers insight into the man, idolized by a sports-loving nation, who fell from glory.

This is a really good read. All cricket fans were appalled by the Hansie Cronje saga; this book suggests that the truth - in South Africa and around the world - could be even worse than we think. It is a well researched study and combines a rigorous dissecting of the facts with a light and often humerous touch. Analytical, but never dry, Gouws seems a natural sports writer.

This book shows that there is more to this scandal than meets the eye. With tremendous insights, the author shows how serious the Cronje affair is not just for South Africa but for world cricket in general. Using comments from influential people as well as some amusing statistical theorys an informative and impartial story is told.
