Product Description

Product Description

From his humble beginnings in Nigeria, Herbie has overcome the odds to become one of the most recognisable and exciting stars of his sport. His explosive style has seen him knock out all but two of his opponents while his willingness to meet dangerous fighters head-on has also been cause for one or two dramatic defeats. Herbie's combative style has earned him the nickname of the 'Dancing Destroyer'. Love him or hate him, there's no denying he's a man who packs one hell of a punch...Outside the ring, Herbie is nothing if not combustible. His tear-ups at press conferences with Michael Bentt and Danny Williams have made the headlines, as has his treatment at the hands of Audley Harrison at the York Hall in London. His colourful life outside of the ring has seen him run up against gangsters and con-men and more than one brush with the long arm of the law - while his family life has been blighted by tragedy with the loss of his younger brother through leukaemia. Here, Herbie tells it as it is, about the early days as the only black kid in a Norfolk boarding school, his short but successful stint as an amateur pugilist, and his career-defining fights against some of the toughest opposition the international boxing world could muster. He's not always been Mr Popular, but everybody wants to know about him. This is his explosive story...

Whenever you hear about Herbie Hide in the press you get the impression
that he is some kind of anti social nut case. Maybe he is, or at least
there is a side of his character which is attracted to confrontation
and violence. But what people tend to overlook is that he was one of
the outstanding talents of the nineties in British boxing. He was twice
heavyweight champion of the world (WBO variety) and was involved in one
or two high profile and interesting fights. Perhaps he could have
achieved so much more had he been a bit bigger than an oversized
cruiserweight. Instead, he lost the title for a second time and after
the tragic loss of his brother his life span out of control. Some of
the stories which were covered in the media are described from Herbie's
point of view while there are other tales which many of us will never
have heard before. I don't ever remember hearing of him being molested
as a youngster before, or of him coming to the rescue of a paralytic
hooker. It certainly kept me enthralled on my train journeys to work for a few days.

A good read - well I presume so as my husband (a boxing enthusiast) could not put it down! Packaged well and arrived on time.

Great read 7 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book is a great read. I picked mine up at the pound shop and wasn't expecting much from it. However it's one of the best if not the best autobiography I have read. I should point out that before reading this book I was by no means a fan of Herbie and didn't know much about him.
What an interesting and surprisingly likeable person he has proved to be!
