Whenever you hear about Herbie Hide in the press you get the impression
that he is some kind of anti social nut case. Maybe he is, or at least
there is a side of his character which is attracted to confrontation
and violence. But what people tend to overlook is that he was one of
the outstanding talents of the nineties in British boxing. He was twice
heavyweight champion of the world (WBO variety) and was involved in one
or two high profile and interesting fights. Perhaps he could have
achieved so much more had he been a bit bigger than an oversized
cruiserweight. Instead, he lost the title for a second time and after
the tragic loss of his brother his life span out of control. Some of
the stories which were covered in the media are described from Herbie's
point of view while there are other tales which many of us will never
have heard before. I don't ever remember hearing of him being molested
as a youngster before, or of him coming to the rescue of a paralytic
hooker. It certainly kept me enthralled on my train journeys to work for a few days.
