Over the years Grand Central Records have consistently knocked out quality hip hop and funk whilst simultaneously capturing the talents of top US rappers to lend an extra dimension to the sound. Rae & Christian's debut LP evolved this sound into something entirely different. A fusion of underlying hip hop sensibilities with lush soul, great lyrics, inspirational guest performances and superb production, it's not hard to see why NSS was widely touted as the natural successor to "Protection".
Luscious deep soulful tracks combine with classy hip hop to create a superb balance. The different emotions contained in the music range from warm and euphoric to sinister and suspenseful. The edginess of openers "Anything U Want" and "SwanSong" grabs your attention straight away, yet just a few tracks on you're listening to lush soul. Appearances from YZ and QBall and Curt Cazal add extra class to proceedings, whilst GC favourite Veba supplies velvety vocal accompaniment to 4 tracks. The legendary Jeru the Damaja's performance on the rousing "Flip the Mic" is typically brilliant, as is the stunning soulful hip hop of "All I Ask". This album has it all - lyrics, beats, melodies, moments of drama, chilled-out elements, a range of emotions - it is unforgettably superb.

This has got to be one of my all time favourite albums, but it was a completely random find! i was looking for something new and bought it entirely on the word of the music shop owner. to begin with i just had it as background music but after a couple of run throughs i couldnt play it without singing along!
Its kind of dark, with both names and voices that you will recognise. I think that all the tracks are very individual and although they are a little massive attack-esque in reputation, i think this album outdoes anything MA have done.
If you buy this album (and you really ought to); it will then become the one all your mates ask you about. its totally under rated and a lot of people havent a clue who R&C are.
But take my word for it, like i took the music shop owners! buy it on a whim for something different and you really wont be disappointed!

Probably the best dance album of 1998/9, R & C's debut album ranges from beautiful Veba-led soul to great American-style raw hip-hop with some of the biggest names lending a hand. Every track hits the right note - a great party record. Apart from anything else, it always feels like R & C and their band of merry men are just having a laugh. Which, after all, is how it should be. Top notch.

I was introduced to Rae and Christian when I started working for Virgin Megastores and I have never looked back. The variety on this album ensures that there's something to please everyone and it does that with style. Buy this now and show it off to all your friends - they wont have heard it before and you'll be labelled as a musical genius for discovering them!!!

Rae & Christian have excelled themselves with this quite brilliant collection of tracks from various artists. I can honestly say that there is not one bad track on the album with the highlight being 'Hush' featuring the incredible vocal talents of the bird from Texas. Not to be missed.

10 out of 10 people gave this 5 out of 5. And with good reason. It has some real class (Play on with the MIGHTY Jungle Bros is a behemoth of a tune), but wait, wait...slow down. Let's consider this: how much of this did they actually write (I was there when they didn't write it, in Fat City), how much of this now sounds a bit dated (er, a lot) and how much have they disappeared from existence since?

True (I speak da troof - so don't criticise me) - it was (fairly) ground-breaking at the time and GB hip-hop always sounds a bit naff (let's be honest) compared to our US cousins' oeuvre (hence the use of some Stateside vocals/help) - but if you really wanted some proper British beats check out Derek B and Blade and Slick Rick).

Unfortunately, for me, the quality of the production here (and it is quality) is overshadowed by the attitude and personality of Manchester music, the Northern Quarter and Grand Central in particular.

Nothing against them personally, just the whiff of over-rating overbears the tunes found therewithin.

Still, Play On, as I say, is immense!

After a few listens of this album, I was hooked. The vocal tracks held more appeal to me than the instrumentals, but R aand C managed to create a stunning debut, especially since they made use of Veba, who has a great voice. Even the track with Texas was good.
