Product Description

Album Description

The Notes from Underground project is a collaboration between the Anglo-Scandinavian trio Stekpanna and the Russian jazz luminaries Leonid and Nikolai Vintskevich. It is a truly international undertaking covering a huge geographical and cultural spectrum: Stekpanna is made up of a Dane, a Swede and a Yorkshireman who met one another in Los Angeles, whilst the Russian contingent carried the torch for jazz under, and often in spite of the old Soviet regime. Just to highlight the quintessential nature of jazz as a true world music, the first seeds of the Notes from Underground idea were sown under the Northern Lights in Finland, during the Kaamosjazz festival of November 2000. Stekpanna and the Leonid Vintskevich quartet had each been invoved in a live radio broadcast for the Finnish Broadcasting Company and were relaxing backstage over a vodka or 2. Inspired by a sense of admiration for one another's music, a camaraderie quickly developed which resulted in Stekpanna being invited to perform in Russia at the 2001 Festival Jazz Province. Several big gigs across Russia, and many more vodkas later, the friendship had deepened on both personal and musical levels. Talk had already begun of Stekpanna returning to Russia, when Oxford Contemporary Music announced a major series of concerts by leading Russian performers across a wide spectrum of musical genres. Obviously they jumped at the chance to include musicians of the status of Leonid and Nikolai in their programme of events, and Stekpanna's bassist Steve Kershaw ensured the necessary contacts were made. Notes from Underground is the outcome of this extraordinary chain of events.
