Product Description

Review

"Webb's take on the two great nations is expert, familiar, profound, funny" --Jeremy Vine

Webb was the BBC's North American editor for eight years. Here he straddles the Pond to explore the tectonic shifts between Britain and America, and why, even if they rub each other up the wrong way, the two nations are inextricably linked. --The Times

Webb offers a fun look at politics. --The Catholic Herald

Product Description

Britain and America have a new word to describe their relationship - 'special' has been replaced by 'essential'. Justin Webb would prefer all adjectives to be abandoned in an effort to tell the real story.
Notes on Them & Us is a wry account of the transatlantic friendship as it actually exists today - how Americans see us, how we Brits see them - and Justin Webb, presenter on Radio 4's Today programme and formerly the BBC's North American editor for eight years, is perfectly placed to comment.

An amusing, myth-breaking, unflinchingly honest read, this is not an attack on either the English or the Americans. Webb concludes that there is a fault line in the long-standing marriage between these two great nations, a cultural divide that separates us. And he argues that recognising this divide, even celebrating it, is the key to a rich future collaboration.

Favor or Favour? 3 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
Special relationship? Essential relationship? ...Whatever...Justin Webb takes us on a fascinating, informed and often provocative odyssey that probes our relationship with the USA. He's mined a wealth of experience gained as the BBC's North American editor for eight years and come up with a great and essential handbook for any Brit visiting the States or anyone trying to get to grips with what underpins that `them and us' thing particularly in this US election year. My own "We're a bit special' comfort zone took a bit of a battering but I was taken to new place by a delightfully accessible writing style, telling arguments and frequent hilarious anecdotes. His compassion and love of both countries shines through but never clouds much sharp observation. A great read!

Good accurate read. 14 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover
I was given this book by an English friend who had lived in the USA for many years, as she knew that I had visited the USA many times, and been to many lesser known areas of that enormous country. I thought it was a beautifully observed account of how we are, them and us - and very accurate. It solved my Christmas present problems as I ended up buying a total of four copies for delighted recipients - all of whom had some knowledge of the USA, and a further copy for my Son in law who is English, but lives and works in California with my English Daughter and their two boys.

Was asked to buy this for Christmas by my 17 year old, who is studying A level Government and Politics, including the US system. He found it easy to read, insightful and thoroughly enjoyable. Now on his birthday list "Prime Minister Boris... And Other Things That Never Happened"! Yep he is a political geek!
