Obviously we all have our opinions and music is by it's very nature a subjective topic. With this in mind I cannot disagree with the previous reviewer more stongly. The vocalist is for me one of the shining lights in prog - first heard in the outstanding Swedish band Ritual. He has a superb range and control and most importantly - I love the sound he makes. No need to extol the virtues of Roine Stolte (guitar) unless you haven't heard the Flower Kings. This is right up there with the best of their music and they for me are the best current progressive group bar none. Don't take my word for it - listen for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise 4 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this cd just because Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings was involved in it.I didn,t know what to expect as i was unaware of how much influence Roine had in thic cd, but i should have known better.Anything he does simply comes out great.I would say that this cd is on a level par as any Flower King release or even better. It's more melodic than the flower kings and i would even say that it is slightly (only slightly) more commercial. The vocals are pleasant and the musicmanship impeccable. The songs quickly grow on you.Overall a very good cd.

Kaipa all over. I got into their music over the last 6 years so this is bit of back-tracking for me but this fits right in. Whilst the songs are perhaps not all as 'tight' as their latest stuff there are some tracks which make one instantly recognise this as no other.

Well worth the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Garden tunage 3 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Notes from the Past feels much more atmospheric than early and later albums there seems to be more emphasis on keyboard layers and less guitar and lots of layered vocal harmonies, the music is still an intricate dance of instruments and vocals but there is definitely a more layer feel to this one, The Keyboards are a stand out making lots of atmosphere for the other instruments to dance around. Roine stolts guitar playing is fun and bombastic and bodacious with lots of widdling. Jonas diddles and twiddles on his bass at every opportunity and the vocals soar this is a good album. The only complaint I have is there is a tendency with this band to stick with the same overall timbres with in their music I just wish that on the next album they would choose some Dodgey wierd sounds the experiment plenty with thier playing in rhythms and everything but they don't experiment with the sound itself which is a shame because at times it can get a little bit ho hum because you heard this sound palette before. That aside it is a flipping brilliant album

4.0 out of 5 stars Delete the vocalist! 11 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Musically this is an outstanding recoding. Hans Lundin's keyboard work and compositions are terrific. The Flower Kings' Roine Stolt and Jonas Rengold compliment Lundin wonderfully. Morgan Agren also does a fine job on the drum kit. The problem is with Patrik Lundstrom's vocals. He is an overly dramatic vocalist who lives in the higher registers. He sounds like a refugee from a failed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical as his vocal approach is better suited for the theater than it is progressive rock. It's a shame as with a better vocalist this disc could have rivaled anything in contemporary prog as the musicians really make the compositions come alive in an exciting way. The lyrics are also embarassingly weak. Still, this is an enjoyable disc, one worth obtaining...Simon
