Originally I bought Creepy Cute Crochet: Zombies, Ninjas, Robots, and More, one of those cute books showing you how to crochet amigurumi monsters. As a complete newcomer to crochet I found it quite difficult and so a friend recommended I try 'Not Your Mama's Crochet' as a starting point.

Amy Swenson's guide is crochet is fantastic - told with a sense of humour the tips and instructions on how to create basic stitches and more complex patterns were just what I needed. With lots of plain, easy-to-understand diagrams I was on my way to crocheting my first amigurumi zombie in no time. I use the book as a handy reference guide every time I come across something new and it hasn't let me down yet - for a beginner it is perfect.

The book has tried (admirably) to include fashionable patterns for clothing and accessories and almost achieved it - most of the items can be easily customised to suit your taste anyway.

I found this book so useful that I went on to buy others in the series - Not Your Mama's Knitting: The Cool and Creative Way to Pick Up Sticks (Not Your Mama's Craft Books) and Not Your Mama's Beading: The Cool and Creative Way to String 'em Along (Not Your Mama's Craft Books)

Disappointed 5 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
I hoped the designs would be a lot more fashionable than they turned out to be, but had a really good look through and none of them were to my taste. Sent this one back to Amazon.

Good for a beginner.. 4 April 2007
Format:Paperback
I love this book- I made the sari silk shrug as a present for my sister. The patterns are easy to follow and the yarns are easy to source, as you get substitution suggestions, which is handy (I hate American books full of American yarns!)

If you're a beginner or fancy something unusual, I recommend this book!!
