Book Description

7 May 2002 Picture Lions

When a little fox’s mother says it is getting too late to play, he decides that he’s not going to be friends with her anymore…

But as the daylight fades and the shadows draw in, the little fox wonders whether it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to stay friends with his mother. As she carries him back to the safety of their den, out of reach of all the horrible things that might be waiting for him in the dark, he is very glad to hear that she’ll be his friend for ever.

Review

"A warm, richly-illustrated story of a mother's steadfast love." Practical Parenting

From the Back Cover

'the little fox didn't want to wait until tomorrow. He wanted to play another game and he wanted to play it now.
I'm not your friend any more, he said. And I'm not going to be your friend again…ever.'

It's not always easy to stop playing when you are having fun. So when his mother says it's time to go, the little fox insists on staying. But as the meadow grass begins to whisper and the evening stars appear, he starts to think again.

Once again SAM MCBRATNEY has succeeded in capturing the raw emotions of the very young. With wry observation he presents a perfect snapshot of a power struggle that every parent will recognise. This beautifully balanced prose is enlivened by KIM LEWIS' magnificent artwork, creating a memorable picture book to be enjoyed by all generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely story for young children 23 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This is lovely little story. Mother and baby fox are out playing in the fields and having lots of fun, but when it comes to time to go home , baby fox doesn't want to come home - he wants to stay playing. He calls out to his mother "I'm not your friend" because she won't allow him stay. Of course in the end he comes home and the mother claims that she will always be his friend. It's very sweet and it's useful for explaining to young children how mothers will love their children no matter what happens, even if they are sometimes a little naughty.
Author Sam McBratney has also written the equally lovely "Guess how much I love you" and many other famous children's books.
